We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Burden and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eric, what is the most important factor behind your success?
There are several things I have done, however the first thing that pops in my head is empathy and customer service. I have helped thousands and thousands of people in their mycology journey. Every time I meet a new person I feel like I have made a new friend. Many of my customers have or are struggling with their mental health. As someone who has also struggled with it and experienced the benefits of mushrooms, it is easy for me to show compassion and understanding with them.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started Denver Spore Company the day after Denver County decriminalized magic mushrooms. I set out to be a high quality and local supplier for any one interested in growing their own medicine.

I stand behind my products and offer free advice and customer service. Test and screen all products for cleanliness and viability. Host and sponsor local events. Give both money and time to non-profits that support community and harm reduction.

Starting Denver Spore Company was not easy. I burned through my small savings almost immediately. I was really good at growing mushrooms but building a website, and setting up a legitimate business was challenging in the beginning. I have learned a lot in the last five years. From lab techniques and logistics, to public speaking and accounting. It has been a challenging “wild ride” for sure.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to the mountains to go snowmobiling if it is winter time. In the summer we’d hit Chatfield Reservoir for wake surfing and Red Rocks for a show.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Stephanie, all my friends and wonderful family. Also to my customers and mycology community. My dogs Cola, Rebel, Chip and Huey!
