We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always been interested in cars. I used to go with my friend and his father to the drag strip when I was growing up, the sounds and the smells still stay with me today. there was something about the way a 1969 Dodge Challenger looked, felt, and sounded that captured a young man. From those early experiences, whether it was buying my first car, buying my first motorcycle, or enjoying reading or watching about new vehicle models, my interest has always been high.
Then came 2018 when I had just moved to Colorado, I was rear-ended at a red light in the middle of the day in Denver. This started a roundabout way into helping people buy and sell cars. My car was totaled and I needed a new car. I wanted a Toyota 4Runner, but I quickly found out how expensive they were in Colorado. So I looked out of state, found one I wanted, and purchased it sight unseen. While I got a great deal, it was really hard to go through the whole process even with it being a dealership. I thought there should be a better way to do this and a better way to give these resources to individuals who want to sell themselves. So we started down this journey of CheckDrive.
What should our readers know about your business?
CheckDrive is a platform to help people sell their vehicles. Whether they want a quick out, or the tools to finalize a sale to another individual, we help people sell like a dealership. We are different in the way we help people get the most value out of their vehicles. In the past 3 years, we have seen the car market go crazy, with the chip shortage shrinking inventory or the prices skyrocketing during over, and the interest rates going up. We started down a path at the beginning of connecting people with mechanics to do a pre-purchase inspection but realized the larger opportunity of helping the buyer and seller in the process of a peer-to-peer sale. It has not been easy. We started by reaching out to people personally before having the technology and the money to capture people autonomously. We believe in this product and path for people, and we will not stop working until everyone in the country has the option to sell their car using CheckDrive.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are lucky to have some great seasons in Colorado. But let’s do a winter trip. I would have them take the train to Union Station to meet. We would start with a drink at the terminal bar before running to the mountains. When we get to Silverthorne, we can stop for a beer at Angry James Brewery before heading to Arapahoe Cafe for a good plate of meat. the next day we would have a day of skiing at Copper Mountain. On the way back to Denver we would stop at Outer Range for a cold beer. When back in Denver we would have a reservation at Senor Bear in the Highlands. The next afternoon we would stop at Blue Pan Pizza for the Brooklyn Bridge pie before having them head out!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give out shout to my family, most notably my wife, Anna for supporting me on my start-up journey. Starting a company is not easy, especially when you’re starting a family, so having a support system is key.
