We had the good fortune of connecting with Lawrence Janowski, MD and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lawrence, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I moved to Colorado from New York City in 2004 in order to open up an Internal Medicine practice in Broomfield. I was already interested in aesthetics and cosmetic medicine, and immediately began to add those services to my practice. In 2004, cosmetic medicine was a fairly new field, with injectibles like Botox having only been approved for cosmetic use just two years prior. As a new member of the Broomfield community, and a physician with a new practice, I made many mistakes. I tried and failed at many ideas, however, I remained committed to a set of core values. These values became the foundation of our business. I can summarize them as generosity, integrity and authenticity. We return to these values over and over again. For example, we don’t offer procedures that do not work well. There are always fads and trends in the cosmetic industry and we do our best to vette every offering. We don’t always get it right, but we do our best to act with integrity in all our interactions.
I use my medical judgement to offer procedures and services that meet each patient where they are at, and don’t over do their treatments. My medical integrity is paramount to me. I am also a husband, a father, and a small business owner in our community, and I do my best to be authentic and connected with the wonderful patients who come through our doors.
In 2010, my wife, Liz, joined the practice as our business manager, and she brought in a a deep commitment to loving kindness and generosity. Our business also grew exponentially during this time, and we do our best to bake generosity in to the business itself. We treat our staff well. We are committed to charitable giving locally, nationally and internationally. And we always try to choose loving kindness in our interactions.
Having a mission-driven, values based business in the cosmetic surgery industry is quite rare, and we take a stand for leadership in meeting each patient where they are at, and offering them services in a kind and gracious environment. We believe that helping patients align what they see in the mirror with all the power and agency they feel inside allows them to live their best lives and offer their own unique gifts in a wider way in the world.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Like most physicians, I went to medical school because I wanted to help people lead better, healthier and happier lives. Once I completed my residency at Mount Sinai in New York City, I realized that my biggest skill was using my hands to perform procedures. That lead me to an interest in aesthetic medicine. When I got in to the business, injectibles like Botox and fillers were fairly new and not that mainstream. I wanted to bring them to a wider audience and make them accessible, easy to receive and as painless as possible. Over time, I became trained in more advanced and complex aesthetic procedures, and even became a trainer for other physicians and nurses in the nation.
These procedures can be a bit hush-hush or controversial, but what we have found is that people from all walks of life, all ages, and all identities want to take control of their appearance and feel their most confident. It is incredibly rewarding to help people feel their very best, and to see them approach the world with a renewed since of confidence.
I am also blessed to have an incredible team that helps me succeed every day.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love listening to and playing music. I play guitar and am an avid pianist. In fact, patients can sometimes hear me practicing piano in between cases. When people come to visit, I think they can’t miss a summer concert at Red Rocks. It is just an incredible experience.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to recognize our amazing staff, some of whom have been with us for over a decade. We have a team that lives and breaths our values. They are the ones who extend our mission. Most of the people who have worked with us are fascinating, strong and incredible people in their own right – and we feel so lucky to have the team that we have. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to offer the care we offer our clientele.
