We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan (Skech) Joe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evan (Skech), where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Denver. I was raised alongside my younger sister, Chloe, and my cousin, Lillie. My mom was an ECE teacher and my dad was a guitarist. Being saturated by music, or musicians rather, gave the lifestyle a sense of normalcy to me from a young age. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t write lyrics to ridiculous made up songs or tend to enjoy the poetry portion of various school projects but rap didn’t really become a factor until I heard Slim Shady on the radio the summer before 6th grade. Most days after I got off of school I would go to work with my mom. Once rap music had really taken a hold of me I would have her print out lyrics to songs so I could study, and eventually perform the words, as a way to fill the time until she got off. At some point or another I didn’t have access to a printer and just started writing shit down myself. I don’t think I believe in people having a “purpose” but I haven’t felt an impetus like it since.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In my music, the attempt is at something interesting. If not, maybe entertaining?. At the very least, it’s what I love to do. So why not put it out there in an effort for sustainability, ya know? At the end of 2019 I had all my dominoes in a wicked-ass line when 2020 came in with a blow torch and kinda melted ’em all into a glob before I could knock em down. In spite of all that, or maybe regardless of it, I’ve used the time to make what I think might be some of my best work to date. I have gotten to expand my catalog and work with some crazy talented people. I’m excited for what’s to come.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly, in a pinch, you can get pretty full experience of the city by staying mainly on one street. Obviously start downtown. Take the mall ride around. See a movie at the pavilions, museums, elitches, coors field, etc. That’s all awesome and you could totally spend a whole week right there, but if you want to get a feel for what it’s really like here, start heading south on north broadway. I performed my first show ever at the now closed three kings tavern. GB fish and chips on Broadway and Louisiana is my favorite restaurant of all time and I have eaten there every year on my birthday since I was 9. Just south of that, you can begin doing some relatively select vintage shopping if you’re into that sort of thing. Same with antiques, book stores, toy stores and a whole assortment of cool, left of mainstream consumerism, artsy kinds of shops. My childhood dog, Tilly was often groomed and eventually put down at pets at broadway. The monster cinnamon roll at Breakfast on broadway was a childhood staple. See a show at the Gothic. Bowl at Moe’s. Get a tattoo at Phantom 8. It’s all there
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As a rapper, my story cannot be told without the inclusion of MC Bulldozer, Leo McManus. I met Leo a couple years back when I saw them perform at thought forms and was immediately floored by the level of talent I was presented with. It felt like being at Kurt Cobain’s high school talent show or waxing comedic with Larry David. I felt like Cus D’Amoto watching Mike Tyson fight for the first time, like Dr. Dre hearing infinite or Hagrid meeting Harry Potter. When we began to collaborate, Dozer elevated my sound and helped legitimize my music in a way I never would have been able to myself. In all aspects of quality, professionalism and artistic skill, they are the ultimate asset. If anyone deserves a shoutout, it’s @mc_bulldozer
