We had the good fortune of connecting with Greg Opperman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Greg, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance has always been important to me. I used to go into an office five days/week and I actually found it pretty easy to have a good balance between the two. Basically, once I left work, I was all about my family. Once the pandemic started and we moved to remote work, that line between the two started getting blurry and I found myself working a lot more. Now that I’m helping to run Snapology, I’ve got that balance back and I couldn’t be happier!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Snapology is a children’s enrichment program that teaches kids STEAM concepts through interactive, play-based learning! We’ve been ranked the #1 enrichment program two years in a row by Entrepreneur Magazine. Our robust and comprehensive curriculum has kids learning while playing with popular building toys, such as LEGO bricks and K’NEX. My wife, Kayla, bought her first territory in March of 2018 and has since expanded to five territories running all along the west side of Denver. I’ve been helping along the way, while working a full-time job, but recently decided to quit that and jump in full-time with Snapology. Neither of us had run a business prior to this, so there has been a lot of learning along the way, but it feels like we’re starting to hit our stride. We’re looking forward to continuing to grow this business and getting more and more kids on a STEAM track!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This depends on what time of year they’re visiting. If it’s in the warmer months, then we of course have to check out a show at Red Rocks or a Rockies game at Coors Field. In the winter, then we could head up to the mountains for some skiing. Our family has been getting the Epic Keystone pass the last couple years since it’s one of the closer resorts and seems to be good for smaller kids (we have a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old), but we also love Crested Butte! No matter the season, we’re always up for a drink on a patio somewhere. Some of our favorite spots nearby are the Red Rocks Beer Garden in Morrison and the Golden Mill in Golden.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout has to go to my wife, Kayla! She has been the owner of Snapology of Golden-Littleton since March of 2018 and has been a huge inspiration for me. I kind of always assumed one of us would have to have a “regular” job. Maybe one where we aren’t really passionate about it, but it pays the bills. After seeing the joy she gets from running the business and getting kids interested in STEAM (something we’re both passionate about as we each have degrees in architectural engineering) I knew I had to jump in and join her! It’s only been a few months since I joined, but I already know it was the right decision.
