We had the good fortune of connecting with Gus Reynolds and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gus, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I feel so grateful to be able to pursue a creative-minded career. The truth is, I have always had a lot of trouble working in jobs that don’t give me the opportunity to be at least somewhat creative. There is a process for me behind creating any sort of art or design that I have totally fallen in love with. Taking ideas from a thought to a sketchbook to a digital design and often times to a print or painting always feels so damn rewarding once it’s done.
I always try to keep an open mind when it comes to work. I have worked upwards of a million jobs it feels like but at the end of the day I realize now that I am happiest when I have some sort of creative freedom in my daily life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have identified as a graphic designer since I was in high school and just in the last couple years have begun exploring new forms, sizes, and and mediums of art. What keeps me excited to continue making art is the idea of continuing to learn and experience new creative opportunities. I think about what kinds of creative projects I am doing these days and many of them are art forms that I didn’t even know how to do a year ago. This year, I am really excited to keep exploring the world of mural art. I have already completed a few murals and each one feels like a slightly different puzzle to solve. I love it though.
I feel very fortunate to have friends and family that support me on my journey as an artist. That being said, I think any sort of creative-minded career is something that constantly requires reevaluation and a desire to learn new things and be unique and that has definitely been a challenge for me. The balance between experimenting with different artistic styles and also continuing to produce quality work is something I am still working on and will continue to work on. One of the best pieces of advice I have ever received is that to be successful at something, you need to put yourself in situations where you have no other choice but to find success. Diving into the deep end and learning through experience is something that has really helped me expand my creative abilities and explore new artistic passions.
I don’t know what I would want the world to know about my brand and story other than I am at the end of the day just a normal person that loves to think creatively. I do feel very passionate about environmental action which is represented in a lot of my art but I also often create designs entirely based on just what is on my mind at that very moment.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For sure one of my favorite things to do in Denver is find new spots to eat. In my experience, the more low-key the restaurant, the better. When friends visit, often times the the go-to move is to hit as many Mexican restaurants in Aurora and East Denver as possible.
Beyond that, I love exploring the city and have recently felt really connected to the Five Points neighborhood. I used to work in that area and as an artist it is one of the most interesting places to visit since nearly every wall is covered with some form of mural art.
I also love Denver sports and try to make it to Nuggets games or Rockies games during the summer as much as possible. Can’t go wrong with an evening game in Denver.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that I owe gratitude towards for supporting me along my journey as an artist and individual. Someone who deserves a particular shoutout is my Dad. My dad has been an amazing teammate and resource for me to help me figure my life out. I have always been impressed at how my dad somehow always pays attention to where I seek inspiration and how my art has changed over the years. Two years ago my dad gifted me a a coffee table book by the artist I seek the most inspiration from. The book is “Covert To Overt” by Shepard Fairey. Little did he know, I have read that book like it’s a bible. I’ve probably gone through it 300 times and owning that book has dramatically influenced my artwork. I have always had a passion for art and dreamed of becoming an artist full-time. My dad is the one who has helped me find the path along the way and I am very grateful for his support.
