We had the good fortune of connecting with Heath Gay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heath, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
When I look back on my journey, the most pivotal decision that shaped my success was embracing the opportunity created by the Covid-19 pandemic. Rather than allowing the shutdown of my hiking business, Hiking University, to derail my passion, I saw it as the perfect moment to evolve and expand.
My love for Colorado—its rugged peaks, rich history, and hidden gems—has always been at the core of what I do. Before Covid, Hiking University focused solely on fitness and skills training for hikers and climbers. But when the pandemic hit, the ability to host in-person events, classes, and group hikes evaporated almost overnight. I was forced to rethink everything.
In 2021, I made the bold decision to close down Hiking University and launch the Colorado Fan Club (CFC), a platform that allowed me to share much more than just the outdoor adventure I had once focused on. The CFC opened doors to a whole new world of possibilities—exploring Colorado’s history, uncovering its forgotten places, and promoting local businesses. This broader approach connected me with a much wider audience, enabling me to share the essence of Colorado with those eager to experience its best-kept secrets.
Today, the Colorado Fan Club is my passion project, built on a foundation of helping people make the most of their time in this incredible state. Whether it’s through showcasing unique events, profiling local history, sharing little-known places in the state, or offering both free and premium resources for outdoor enthusiasts and Colorado locals/visitors, my goal is simple: to inspire others to truly discover everything that makes Colorado extraordinary.
In hindsight, the most important decision wasn’t just shifting my business model—it was about evolving to match the ever-changing world, all while staying true to my love for this incredible place. The result? A thriving community that shares my passion and a business that continues to grow with every new adventure.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey in the health and wellness field has been rooted in a strong foundation of education, practical experience, and an unwavering dedication to helping others achieve their personal best. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of wearing many hats in diverse roles, each one shaping my growth and professional expertise. These experiences—ranging from corporate to educational settings—instilled in me a passion for lifelong learning and a deep desire to share knowledge that empowers others.
Launching the Colorado Fan Club allowed me to merge my professional background with my love for Colorado’s vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes, and outdoor adventures. This endeavor isn’t just about showcasing the beauty of Colorado; it’s about creating meaningful connections and inspiring others to explore, discover, and celebrate all this incredible state has to offer.
The road hasn’t always been smooth. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced the challenge of wearing multiple hats—business owner, tour guide, writer, website developer, social media manager, and product creator—all at once. Each role brought its own set of demands, requiring adaptability, organization, and a relentless focus on the bigger picture. I’ve learned that perseverance and a commitment to continuous improvement are the keys to overcoming obstacles, no matter how daunting they may seem.
Through this journey, I’ve gained invaluable lessons. True success isn’t about numbers; it’s about the relationships you build—with clients, collaborators, and the communities you serve. Growth, both personal and professional, happens outside your comfort zone. Whether leading a seminar for over 50 people or conquering a Colorado 14er hike, I’ve found that the greatest rewards often lie on the other side of challenge and effort.
Today, I’m incredibly excited about the future of the Colorado Fan Club. I’m proud of how far it’s come and thrilled to continue championing the people, places, products, and experiences that make Colorado truly extraordinary. As we move into 2025, I’m eager to expand our offerings—introducing overnight adventures, history hikes, private tours, and even a dedicated Colorado Fan Club membership packed with exclusive benefits.
The Colorado Fan Club isn’t just a business—it’s a reflection of my passion, my purpose, and my commitment to sharing the magic of Colorado with the world. The best part? This journey is just getting started.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Creating custom Colorado adventures and itineraries is one of my favorite things to do…and a specialty of the Colorado Fan Club. If my best friend was visiting Colorado, one option I would consider is the Idaho Springs area. Idaho Springs is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, offering visitors a perfect blend of history, outdoor adventure, and small-town charm. Just 30 miles west of Denver, this quaint mountain town is a gateway to both relaxation and adventure.
For history lovers, Idaho Springs is a gold rush town with a fascinating past. The town’s historic main street is lined with charming buildings that evoke the spirit of the 1800s, and you can explore the nearby Argo Gold Mine & Mill, where visitors can learn about the area’s rich mining history. The iconic Idaho Springs Historic District offers a glimpse into the past with its preserved Victorian architecture.
