We had the good fortune of connecting with Hugo Escobar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hugo, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When it comes to work life balance, I look at the big picture personally and professionally. Balance for me has changed overtime in that I’m deliberate of what I need to do and what I want to do. This has allowed me to meet my goals and it’s saved me a lot of time. Having a vision and priorities allows me to juggle several things in my professional and personal life. My wife taught to be in the moment as in the past my mindset would be in the future. I learned to balance today and tomorrow and it’s really paid off.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am retired from the United States Air Force where I served for 21 years both as an enlisted member and an officer. The Air Force allowed me to serve our nation while seeing the world and working with talented fellow Airmen. Today I work as a civilian for the United States Space Force as a Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator.

People are my business. My education background is human resources and personal finances. I have led programs where I’ve educated people on transition, finances, equal opportunity, mediation, readiness and resiliency.

As a former accredited financial counselor, my favorite topic is how to reduce and eliminate debt. My wife and I are 100% debt free and this allows us to live life and give to others in many ways.

While not every job I’ve had has been exciting, I became a functional expert at that job and that really opened other doors to great jobs.

I am proud about the YouTube channel (YOUR Military Money) I created to in 2013 where I’ve shared experiences on finances, the Air Force and living a deliberate life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Colorado has so many beautiful outdoor places to visit- I would take my friend to the Great Sand Dunes National Park followed by a hot springs soak. We would then go to the top of Pikes Peak and then down to Manitou Springs for some food.

We’d take a three day hike into the Lost Creek Wilderness Loop and enjoy the peace and quiet. This is a 28.3 hike with incredible views and plenty of time to think about life.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When I was 16 I met my friend Bill Corrigan who introduced me to Jack Kerouac’s book On The Road. I read the book and it opened my eyes in that there was a world of adventure besides my home city of Los Angeles. It planted the seeds of vision and curiosity that included good friends and people.
