We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacalyn Forléo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacalyn, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
I think the most important lesson I’ve learned in my career is that I get to decide ‘how’ I work. That applies to ‘who’ a work with, ‘how’ I’ll do my work. And that might mean that I don’t work with some people. The reality is, and this is an old saying, that you better like your work because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. I learned many years ago that there are some people in my industry that do not align with what I value, and therefore not the right people to work with. That’s a hard pill to swallow when you don’t have a lot of business coming in and need to make a difficult decision for your bank account that better supports your mindset

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think the biggest differentiator between myself, and my competition is my commitment to clients beyond the transaction. My goal is truly to education clients so that I’m setting them up for long term success both with their home, and long term. I enjoy building a relationship with my clients and becoming friends with them and seen as someone they can come to when they need help with anything from their home to recommendation on referrals, or just setting up play dates with our kids. I feel the same with my agents. I want to build a long-term relationship with them and that means supporting them in their business and helping them to help more clients. I focus a lot on the education around home ownership and I do a lot of work to help education everyone, from every walk of life on how to buy a home by laying foundational work around credit first. I truly believe that owning a home can be a catalyst for the long-term finical health of an individual and a family. I want everyone that I work with to be successful in work, life, and finances. And I’ll go to great lengths to help them make that happen. I want my clients, and my referral partners to be a part of my life for a lifetime, not just a transaction.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would plan a fall hike or walk to check out the colors and check out some of the smaller neighborhoods around town and maybe catch a show. If possible, for sure head into the mountains for some site seeing as well. I’m a big fan of the smaller neighborhoods in Colorado like Downtown Littleton Mainstreet – stopping in for a glass of wine at Kate’s Wine bar, or dinner at Cafe Terracotta. Breakfast at Sunny’s in Sunnyside is also a great spot with a diner feel and friendly walkable neighborhood. Duo in Sunnyside is also a favorite for dinner. And I’m a big fan of Steakhouse 10 in Englewood. Pearl Street in south Denver is also amazing, from the Farmers market on Sunday mornings, to the local shops and restaurants, you can’t go wrong. A comedy show at one of our Comedy Works locations is also a great fit, I prefer the down town location for that up close and personal feel. Or the DTC location for a little more space, and the option for a phenomenal dinner at Lucy’s before the show starts.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My all-time favorite book for business and personal life is Psycho Cybernetics by Dr Maxwell Maltz. I read or listen to it at least 2x a year, sometimes more. It really helps to tap into the power of your thinking and your mindset and how that impacts the rest of your day-to-day life. How you handle certain situations, how you present yourself etc. I especially love an example Dr. Maltz provides stating that if you fall down, you are not a faller, you fell. Just like in life if you fail at something, this doesn’t make you a failure, it’s just something you failed at one time. So, try again.

I would be remiss if I didn’t also acknowledge my dad, Dave Gallegos. He’s the one that got me into the mortgage industry, so now he’s stuck with me. But if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be where I am today or have the success that I’ve had. Some may think that working for my dad gives me an advantage, I assure you it did not. It made me work harder to prove I am meant to be where I am. Don’t’ get me wrong, getting to see my dad every day is great, most days. But there was for sure some crying early on in my career!
