We had the good fortune of connecting with JAMES LAFLEUR and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JAMES, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
In my humble opinion; habits play a very important role in our daily lives. They lay the foundation of a successful and fulfilling career as an artist and sole proprietor. Habits shape our daily actions, influence our mindset, and help us stay focused on our goals. By consistently practicing positive behaviors—like discipline, punctuality, and self-care—we build momentum toward long-term growth and well-being. Personally; I make my bed each morning and don’t touch it again until I am ready to sleep. When I wake up each day, I drink lots of water before touching my coffee pot and make it a point to draw something, anything, every day. Attempting different mediums of art also expands creativity, I enjoy everything from ceramics, wood work, watercolor to tattooing. Making a habit to incorporate creativity in every aspect of life is important to grow as an artist.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I grew up in Louisiana where I played lots of music and did a lot of graffiti as a teen. I used to draw on my friends in school, and get in trouble for it all the time! I tried many mediums and now am now an abstract wood canvas painter, and tattoo artist, whose work is deeply inspired by the organic beauty of nature. Drawing from the fluidity of intricate imperfect patterns of plant and animal life. I create abstract pieces that evoke a sense of harmony, balance, and connection with human roots. My wood canvas paintings, and body art, explores the delicate balance between the human experience and nature. Each piece inviting viewers to experience nature’s organic elegance and beautiful vitality. Through my work I seek to remind us of our shared relationship with the natural world and one another. My shop; Nova Tattoo & Art recently expanded and relocated to Westminster where most of my pieces are shown. I also have some pieces at the Stanley Marketplace in Aurora. I’m very thankful for the Colorado community and will continue to create!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Definitely Meow Wolf! Meow Wolf is an immersive art and entertainment collective known for creating large-scale, interactive experiences that blend storytelling, technology, and surreal environments. I’ve been there multiple times and find it to be inspiring and relaxing. After Meow Wolf I’d say head over to Aurora for some Katsu Ramen. Denver has lots of great breweries and restaurants. I also enjoy the many hiking trails that Colorado has to offer. Time spent in nature is like charging our mental battery. A lot of my art is inspired by the beauty and imperfections of nature. The artist Pony Lawson once stated that in my work- the imperfections are what make it perfect. Outside of Denver I also like the Golden area as it offers rafting and great fishing. I’d also recommend Manitou Springs for anyone visiting!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this shoutout to the late great Greek philosopher, Epictetus. I’ve studied a lot of his writings/teachings and it has definitely impacted my life for the better. Despite his early hardships, he became one of the most influential Stoic thinkers, teaching that true freedom comes from within and that we should focus only on what is in our control. He emphasized the importance of self-discipline, virtue, and inner peace, often using simple, practical wisdom to guide ethical living. I believe his philosophy guides and inspires my artwork as well as daily life.
