Meet Jay Ferracane

Today we’re excited to be connecting with Jay Ferracane again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.
Jay , always such a pleasure connecting with you and thank you for sharing your stories, insights and inspiring messages with our community. We’re looking forward to getting the download and what you have been up to since our last interview, but first can you briefly introduce yourself to folks who might have missed the prior conversation.
Hi, I’m Jay Ferracane, a graphic designer with over 25 years of experience based in Colorado. I run a design studio called Angrybovine, where we focus on building meaningful brands and visual identities that stand out. I also teach design at the University of Colorado, which keeps me inspired and connected to emerging talent in the field.
What sets me apart is my ability to combine strategy and creativity—crafting designs that not only look great but also resonate deeply with audiences. My journey has been fueled by a passion for pushing boundaries, whether it’s reimagining the visual identity of a technology company, exploring edgy and art-driven aesthetics with independent brands, or collaborating with non-profits to bring their stories to life.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with an eclectic mix of brands, from startups to established names, my approach is about listening, experimenting, and delivering work that truly connects.

Great, so let’s jump into an update on what you have been up to since we last spoke. What can you share with us?
Thanks for having me back! A lot has been happening since our last conversation, and it’s been an exciting, dynamic and challenging time. Here’s what I’ve been up to:
On the studio side, Angrybovine has been tackling some cool projects. We’ve been working on a brand refresh presentation for large technology brand leading the way in identification security, where the goal is to modernize their visual identity while staying true to their core DNA.
I’ve also been collaborating with Denver based, Truewerk on pattern and graphic designs for apparel, which has been a fun challenge to blend style and brand storytelling in a wearable format. Another highlight has been working with an Oregon based hemp-infused beverage brand. It’s always exciting to explore how design can shape perceptions and experiences in such an evolving industry.
Teaching at the University of Colorado remains a huge source of inspiration. My most recent students just completed my foundational branding course where they’re reimagining the identities of brands from many different industries, each with its own unique challenge to highlight offer opportunity into particular problem solving opportunities. Seeing their creativity flourish and guiding them through the design process keeps me energized and optimistic about the future of the field. And I may learn more through them than they do through me:).
Of course, no journey is without its challenges. Balancing all these projects and staying creatively sharp can be a lot, but I’ve found that staying connected to meaningful work keeps me grounded. The support of collaborators, clients, and the design community helps a lot.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to additionally continue Caffeinated Mornings, a monthly speaking series about creatives, that I’ve been doing for a few years. Our line up for 2025 has some great guests on deck. Come join us. https://www.caffmorns.com/

When you look back on your life, what are three things you expect to be proud of? I recently asked a similar question of recent guest, Rick Griffith on my show Caffeinated Mornings. He said he would love to be a footnote in someone elses success. That got me thinking. What will my legacy be…what impact have a i made?
Work: Im always proud of when projects launch and the are received well. But what I’m really proud of at work is sticking it out when it would be easy to quit or walk away.
Life: I’ve been surprised recently how much I realize I still like learning new skills and things. I’ve always hated the quote “Celebrate for a moment, then move on.” I think its important to take a look at the things you’ve done frequently and with some thought, and be proud of those achievements. no matter how big or small.
Family: My family is my biggest inspiration and my the source of pride. My wife is the glue of our family, she holds us together and has given us all purpose. My two sons amaze me everyday. Smart, capable, and sensitive. They can do so much and communicate even more, I think my family is the best, most meaningful project I’ve ever worked on,
