We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Uecker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, what do you attribute your success to?
Regarding success, a big part of my journey as a healer and solo business owner and entrepreneur has to do with the way that being in business has changed my definition of success. For many years I was attached to an idea about what success looked like. I was attached to making a certain amount of money, having a certain number of clientele, which would afford me certain things in life. Those things just kept NOT looking like I wanted them to. I considered changing directions completely and letting the business go many times. But every time I got to that point I always realized that, no matter what else I do to make money, I would still have to serve people in the way that I was serving them in my business. I realized that what gave me true satisfaction in life was to serve people with the healing work that I do. After a few cycles of this I stopped focusing on the external definition of success and started focusing on deep satisfaction that I got out of doing my work. Despite not making as much money or having as large a practice as I thought I wanted, everything has worked out fine. I’ve been in business 20 years now and I’ve never been happier with life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There are two main forces that impact our lives and our healing journey from moment to moment: expansion and contraction. Anything that happens in life is a combination of those two things. If we don’t include both those polls anything we do, healing included, is incomplete. For example, I think it’s popular in the alternative healing world to focus on expansion, on love and light, on making transformation happen. One of my gifts is to help people bring love and spaciousness to the shadowy, contracted parts. In the process they learn to trust the intelligence of life and are transformed by life. They get to experience even more expansion and love and light in the process. Real healing is about feeling a wider range on both ends of the spectrum. I’m very proud of the fact that I’ve been in private practice now for 20 years. I’m also proud of the place I’ve come to. I much more at ease with every aspect of life. I used to spend so much energy pushing against life. When I started trusting life it showed me that it had my best interest at heart. As I just alluded to I have a long history of pushing and pulling against life, wishing it looked some other way. There were times that I wanted to quit because I thought it just wasn’t working. I always realized, though, that whatever I was doing to make money, I’d still have to do the work that I’m doing because of the satisfaction that it brings. To be honest I don’t know that I did overcome challenges. Life used challenges to beat me into submission until I committed to doing this work. What I learned along the way is that wants and needs me to do what it is that I came here to do. When I’m not moving in that direction it hurts. So I do what I do to help others embody their purpose on the planet.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the things that makes Colorado so amazing is all there is to do in nature. It’s true there are many great things to do in the area but I think I would take my friend on a tour of all the hot springs in the area.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There have been so many critical junctures along the way and the teachers that showed up at those critical junctures. At one point I was feeling called to take another level of responsibility for my own healing journey in order to help others heal more deeply. That’s when a major mentor and teacher of mine, a man named Lawrence Conlan, stepped up. Lawrence Conlan has been a network chiropractor, naturopathic doctor and energy healer in the Boulder area for many, many years. He showed me the consciousness awakening power of mindfulness meditation. He showed me that presence is more important than any healing technique. He gave me permission to follow my soul’s wisdom when working with clients. These days Lawrence leads healing retreats for those who want to embody their soul’s gifts and soul’s essence and serve others with those gifts. His website is www.passionateease.com
