We had the good fortune of connecting with JayLynn McDaniel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JayLynn, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
A term that I recently discovered that I am now always using to describe me is a SOULpreneur. When I first heard this word, I related to it instantly. The definition of a Soulpreneur is an artist, a craft person or entrepreneur who has created a business out of something that aligns with their higher calling. They view what they do as an expression of their higher self. My legacy. I ponder about this question a lot and what exactly legacy means to me, I know that I’m forever evolving, creating and building my legacy each and every single day. My legacy is bigger than myself, it goes beyond my business, it goes beyond this dimension. I believe that legacy is deeply embedded in love, soul and inspiration- how your vibe, your energy, your actions influence others and what knowledge and beliefs you leave behind even after your physical body is no longer on this Earth. I want people to remember my love and HOW I love. How my love lights up even the dullest of rooms and how I create my Art based on love and magic. Because without love and magic, there will be no legacy. I want my legacy to be synonymous with family, with culture, with soul and intention. My family and my culture are a big part of who I am.

I think to myself- what can I do further in my journey that will inspire others to be SOULpreneurs as well. There are many entrepreneurs out there but are the majority of them in a field that fulfills and enriches their soul and spirit? I would guess not- we need more people happier and healthier in business doing what they love and what they are meant to do rather than just doing what is the most convenient way for them to survive. Are you surviving or are you thriving?

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My background and my first love is Modeling- I started my modeling career when I was 15 years old. Modeling was the beginning of everything for me- opened the doors and paved the way for so many opportunities for me- as someone who has struggled with self worth, depression and anxiety- Modeling was a saving grace in my journey. I’ve been published in over 16 different countries. I launched my candle business November 2019- I guess you could describe me as a model who makes candles. I’m an Artist in my own right. I love creating- I love self expression.

I would say the most important factor behind the success of my brand CandlesbyJay is the care, thought and intention that I put into each and every single candle. There is a purpose and deeper meaning behind every element I choose to incorporate- from the scents, colors, crystals, to my flowers, herbs etc. Not only are my products infused with so much love and energy- they are made with only the purest, high quality most natural ingredients. I am a huge advocate on products being environmentally friendly, sustainable and just healthier for our world and the people and animals that inhabit this world. I artisan hand pour and hand craft each and every candle individually. I do not machine produce anything. I think it gives my work that personal, sentimental touch that people love and appreciate. Before I started CandlesbyJay, I was one of those people (and I still am) just obsessed with candles. There was never a time when a candle was not lit in my home. I started doing research on what the average candle contains, hows it’s made etc. What I discovered shocked me. The most popular candles in the market are made with paraffin wax and fragrance oils filled with phthalates and other harmful and unnatural ingredients. I learned that paraffin wax candles give off similar fumes to that of diesel fuel. I believe that something so beautiful as a candle should not be tainted by such harsh chemicals and they shouldn’t be harmful to you or the environment at all.

All CandlesbyJay products are paraffin, paraban, phthalate, toxin free. I use 100% pure soy wax that is ethically sourced and renewable. You can enjoy the aesthetic of my candles, the scent of them, the ambiance you create with them- worry free. I’m a very spiritual person as well. I combine my love and knowledge of the metaphysical world and the many properties of crystals, flowers, herbs, plants and roots. I believe in magic, love and the well being of your mind, body, heart, spirit and soul. My candles are an extension of that- I have two different lines; my Original Scented Candles and my Ritual Intention Candles. My Crystal Ritual Intention Candles are made with the purpose of “Manifesting your Miracles”. I invite my customers to set intentions by visualizing and writing down what they wish to manifest in their life. They can meditate with my Ritual Candles, they can repeat their affirmations over their lit candle. Whatever resonates, I’m a firm believer in just raising your vibration and being the energy you wish to attract. There is so much power in the Universal Laws and how we can use them to create the lives we want to live while being close to source.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First of all, I am such a movie and dinner girl. I LOVE food, I LOVE film, I love adventuring and exploring but I also love relaxing. A perfect Saturday to me would be to sleep in then go to a yoga class to set the day with intention, good vibes and healing. There are some beautiful hikes that I’ve recently found and I’ve grown to appreciate nature more and more. We can grab brunch at Crepes n’ Crepes in Cherry Creek North. They have the most amazing crepes. Then I would check out the Denver Botanic Garden- I love plants and flowers so much. After we could grab boba tea at Kung Fu Tea and a cupcake at Milk & Cake. I have a big sweet tooth lol. Maybe check out an Art Gallery somewhere. We have some amazing metaphysical shops here as well. I love expanding my crystal and tarot collection lol. I love to visit Goddess Isis, Alchemy Ritual Goods, RitualCravt, Golden Rock Shop. I love surrounding myself with those vibes. I’ve never been a night life person but I do enjoy a nice dinner. I love sushi- I’d probably choose to end the night at Hapa Sushi- I absolutely love their food, To end the night we can catch a film, a horror movie in particular because those are my favorite.

All in all, good company is what matters. I’ve had the most amazing times with people just conversing in a car or on a couch- doing minimal but being able to connect with that person so naturally and effortlessly where a conversation is all you need.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
During the year I started making candles, I was at such a low place in my life. I experienced a pivotal event that changed me forever. 2019 was the year I survived something I thought would destroy me but instead of destroying me, it helped build a new life for me in a way. I had the most abrupt spiritual awakening. I believe in miracles because of this- If I could overcome the most dismal time in my life and transmute a curse into a blessing, then anyone can do the same. I am living proof that there is a light at the end of every tunnel. When I began making candles, I had no intention of turning it into a business at first. Then suddenly it grew overnight- I had no idea how much my business would flourish- it was the most serendipitous unintentional blessing ever. In turn, I flourished with my business. I became a stronger, wiser person because of what I experienced.

It takes a village to raise a child, I believe it also takes a village to raise a business. My family, friends and loved ones are the best support system that I can ask for, There are a plethora of people who I owe my success too. Who have lent me their kind, guiding words- who have given me a shoulder to cry on, who have been with me since Day 1 encouraging my growth and helping motivate me. I am incredibly grateful to be surrounded by love. My mother and sisters especially have been my anchors throughout this whole journey. They keep me going everyday. Everything I do is I do with my family in mind. That one day I could give them all a life they deserve. I also have the most amazing, most loving customers ever.

Candle making is an Art and a Science. I call my kitchen a lab. I feel like a chemist sometimes but it’s because candle making IS chemistry. The process to make the best functioning candle is more complicated than people give credit too. I had to learn a lot about business in a short amount of time and I’m still learning and evolving. It doesn’t just end with my candles- I have so many business ideas I want to launch soon.

If I could give a piece of advice to anyone on their Soulpreneur journey or otherwise- it would be to please practice Self Care and Healing. Loving yourself, honoring yourself and taking care of your body, mind, heart and soul are key to a successful mission. With care, everything else falls into place. I just want to inspire. No matter your background, no matter your past, no matter what head start you have or didn’t have- there is hope. Always. You are so loved, so deserving, so valued and there is more than enough abundance and space in this world that you can win too. That’s what I want people to take away from me and my work.

Professionally, there are significant women in my life who have been nothing but inspiring figures that I wish to give credit too. Ashley Otori is the owner of 7th Witch House- I discovered her Summer of 2020. The Legion and her products have changed my life. She is an author, witch, professor, business tycoon amongst so much more. Veronica Singhaus is the owner of Deep Rooted Healing and she opened up her shop just recently. She is a healer as well as a business owner and I can’t thank her enough for giving my candles another platform. Elizabeth Filkin is the Owner of Cosmic Tea Holistic Shop and she is one of the best psychics I have ever gone too. My candles are also featured at her shop. It is one the greatest honors to walk into a store and see your own products displayed.
