We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Naused and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always loved real estate. My father managed buildings for Douglas Elliman in NYC (Manhattan). But when I was young living in NYC, the uncertainty of real estate was a deterrent to me. I had rent and crippling college debt to pay. When we moved to Colorado, we had the courage and capital to buy investment properties and flip our own homes. I loved the entire process and dreamed of becoming a realtor. Our boys were little and between daycare costs and our mortgage, I was scared. Would I be able to contribute to my family?
Selling our last home in Platt Park was such a horrible experience that it pushed me to reconsider starting my own business. Who was this person with my dream job that didn’t have the best interests of their clients in mind?? I knew that I could do better! I got my license and have had nearly four blissful years in real estate. I have never looked back. Not for one single second.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well, the market has changed and we all must learn to adapt to best serve our clients. For sellers, things such as staging and appropriate pricing are more important now than ever. I recently started my own staging company, Little Green Chair Staging, to be a true, full-service resource for my clients. My relationship through LIV Sotheby’s International Realty gives me the ability to provide 5-star, full-concierge services to my clients — everything from staging (as I mentioned) to cleaning, aggressive marketing plans, and professional photography, to name just a few. This market now gives buyers more negotiating power, which is my specialty.
I am extremely hands-on, so that keeps me very busy. I am not the type of realtor that has my clients sign a contract with me and then passes them along to an assistant. I am there with my clients every single step of the way. What you see is what you get.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It really depends on what they want to do. We have different itineraries for our foodie friends from NYC than we do for my in-laws who love museums more than eating out. For my in-laws, we have taken them to everywhere from Meow Wolf, to the Denver Art Museum and the Museum of Nature and Science, had high tea at the Brown Palace, and toured the Molly Brown House. We have even done a ghost tour of Cheeseman Park (it used to be a cemetery!) We live by Wash Park so impromptu picnics with a soccer ball, fancy sandwiches, and a bottle of wine (for the adults) are a must. Our foodie friends enjoy Fruition, Potager, El Five, Olivia, and of course, the neighborhood staple, Sushi Den. On date nights, my husband spend our time in Baker’s South Broadway neighborhood because it reminds us of NYC.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The classes associated with getting your real estate license are designed to help you pass the licensing test. The test does NOT prepare you for becoming a REALTOR. Every transaction is different and presents its own challenges. I learn something new every single day, which is what I love about this job. I am eternally grateful for all the people that have helped me along the way — my title insurance rep, my lender, my former mentor through my brokerage. Without the wisdom and the experience of these amazingly talented people, I would not be the knowledgeable REALTOR that I am today. I look at this as a service and continually try to pay it forward. Want to get your license? Give me a call . . . I will do what others have done for me and tell you what I know.
