We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenn Merz (Malkasian) and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenn, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The way I think about risk taking has definitely changed over the last few years. Prior to our move from New Jersey in 2016, I always talked myself out of a new venture that seemed too uncertain of the outcome. When my husband and I decided to move to Colorado, we had no plan, no jobs. I decided to expedite the move I left my job to start packing and find a place for us to live. Within six weeks we moved still no jobs, no plans, just an apartment. This was by fair the riskyist thing I have ever done! The move here has drastically changed my life, I have started new careers, started my own art brand and have had multiple art exhibits in the Art District of Santa Fe.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work consists of various subject matters with a primary focus on the female figure and landscapes; utilizing shape a color to express how I see them. As a painter, print maker and sculpture this gives me the ability to combine various techniques to create mixed media art. At this point in my artist career I am most proud of my latest series part of a joint exhibit with Terrel (Lifted Spirit Photos) Hydrodynamics (on view until October 11th, 900 Santa Fe Drive Denver CO). Water is a subject mater that I haven’t explored creating before, nor have I shown with a photographer before. Despite those obstacles our show has been very successful!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My personal favorite spot in Denver is the Art District on Santa Fe.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are two people who without them I may not have had my successes. First is my husband Sean Malkasian for his unconditional support, and for the push to live the unlived life! Secondly Katherine Payge previous owner of Payge Gallery on the Art District of Santa Fe, she saw my potential as a young and upcoming artist providing the opportunity to be her assistant, help run her gallery, and 4 months to use her gallery for exhibitions.
