We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Bauckman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, is there something you believe many others might not?
“You need a nice camera to take really great pictures.”

I’ve heard this so many times and although I do agree that certain equipment is imperative to running a professional photography business, I’ve also learned that it’s more about who is clicking the button and operating the camera than the type of equipment used!! After countless hours spent researching my specific style of photography, I’ve come to learn that my equipment will always be the same but it’s who I am as a photographer that captures the true photo!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love capturing photos of other people whether it be candid, fun photos of someone snowboarding or posed, traditional photos at a family reunion. I’ve reached out and tried landscape photography but quickly learned that that is not my niche. I love people and I want to capture those special memories that they’ll cherish for life!

I feel this occupation allows me to truly utilize my creative side. For every session, I know there will be new challenges as well as something new I will enjoy. These situations have taught me to be extremely flexible! I’m quick with my camera and I can look at the worst location and turn it into a beautiful, new memory for someone!

Another way I utilized my creative talent was I created the Front Steps Project here in our community during Covid. I pulled together other photographers in our community and we set out (with permission from our local police) to capture photos of families exactly how they were during isolation. My goal was for families to 1) have something exciting to look forward to and 2) capture photos of how they wanted to remember Covid. During the photos, some families wore their pajamas, others played board games and some just sat on their porch and smiled. It was a beautiful opportunity to bring our community together as well as give families something to remember. I ended up personally visiting over 200 families/businesses in our community in that short 4 week period. Our entire project reached 340 families/businesses during that month of April!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting our area for a week, I would plan on a different event for each day she was here!

One day, we would take the kayaks out on Grand Lake, eat ice cream at Miyachi’s on the beach, and finish at Sagebrush in Grand Lake for dinner. Another day, we’d visit Winter Park, have lunch at Rudi’s Deli or Rollin’ Street and go hiking or biking back at St Louis creek. I would also take her on a backpacking trip to Columbine Lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness here in Grand County, Colorado. It’s a beautiful 3 mile trail that ends at a beautiful lake up in the Rocky Mountains. We would finish the day with ice cream from Charlie’s in Winter Park and have dinner at Hernandos Pizza! I would also save a day for riding ATVS up on Corona Divide for the beautiful view of the Winter Park Resort! And we would definitely hit the Waterfall Trail at our Snow Mountain Ranch one day!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am grateful for my husband, Jeff, for purchasing me a DSLR camera 8 years ago and encouraging me to pick it up and give it a go. We’ve had a crazy journey with balance but he’s supported me along the way and provided advice on how to better myself and my business.
