We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Mullins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, what makes you happy? Why?
Family and Art. Creating art makes me happy, as I have this amazing outlet to let my mind run free with no limitations or rules. Creativity is something that soothes my soul and helps me calm the chaos that’s all around. Also spending time with my family.

Having big family dinners where we laugh and joke is the best.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I own and operate my own photography company. I created my own business and have slowly built my brand solely through the power of word of mouth advertising, and I value and appreciate all of my clients.  Many are first time clients, but most are returning clients that come back yearly for their photos; and I know they truly value my vision and my work.

I feel so honoured and blessed, as each year my clientele grows due to their recommendations to their friends.
It means so much to me that people are happy with their photographs, as I try to capture their true nature. I like candid photos and try to portray their “real” moments.  I try to have a relaxed atmosphere, where we have fun and joke. All the while, I listen, even when they aren’t talking by watching their interactions and energy.
And I always make sure to provide a large variety of photos to choose from.
I don’t like to limit their final images to a certain amount, as that’s not how life works! If I can’t choose a small handful of photos to edit, then how could I expect my clients to choose only a handful to keep?
Growing my business has taken a lot of time and effort. I have rebranded, and re-built my website several times as my style keeps evolving and I want to always keep a fresh perspective.

I also try to bring my kids along to photoshoots. Not only do they help and assist me, but I like to give them a camera and let them shoot photos from their perspective. While families are looking at me, they are capturing their own candid and unique perspectives. Not only does this create an amazing bond with my children but I get to see life through their eyes and get a glimpse of their perspective! They teach me, as much as I teach them, and they have helped me perfect my skills in photographing families and children. And who knows,  maybe one day they will carry on in the photography business!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First thing we would need is to do a little window shopping and have lunch down in Cherry Creek North or 16th St. Mall, then head out downtown for some drinks. The nightlife on Larimer or Union Station is always entertaining. If it’s winter time we are definitely hitting the slopes for snowboarding and checking out Breckenridge. We would most definitely have to get crepes there as well since they have a little stand who make the most amazing ones. Lastly, to round out the trip, we would need a day of pampering with massages, pedicures and manicures.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family.  I come from a very large family with lots of extremely talented artists who have inspired and supported me at every turn. More specifically my mom, Rose and my Aunt Esther. They deserve so much credit in helping me reach my goals and supporting my decisions. My Aunt also owns her own graphic design business which inspires me everyday.  I go to them for advice and counseling, and they push me creatively and help me be the best I can be.  And of course my children and husband. Their support and willingness to give up weekends to help me on photoshoots or pick up my slack when I am busy editing means the world to me.
