We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny Parulski and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jenny, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I never used to take risks.

I went to college to be a teacher, landed a dream job as a math teacher right out of college, worked my way up the school’s ladder quickly to Math Department Chair as a second year teacher, and I thought I would be in that career forever. It was what I went to school for and was the stable path to paying my bills and growing in the education world. It was the smart, stable thing to do to stay in teaching.

My third year teaching, my world got flipped upside down right underneath me when I developed PTSD.

I had to take a very unexpected medical leave from work, and I had to do a LOT of hard, inner work on myself. My medical leave was taking longer than originally expected and while I was out on medical leave, they filled my position. I was devastated and heartbroken. What was I to do?? This stable job of mine disappeared right from underneath me overnight.

During this difficult time, I had the realization that the teaching in a traditional school setting is not what I was meant to do. I was very torn because education is what I lived and breathed. I poured every ounce of what I had into that profession and it’s what I was supposed to do, right? It’s what I went to school for, after all. I had a mortgage to pay for, student loan payments, I was married to someone who also worked in the education world, and we absolutely needed my income. There wasn’t wiggle room for me to not go right back into teaching.

My husband greatly encouraged me to take a look at what I WANTED to do. If I could do anything for a career, what would I do? I love working with my hands, and I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to build farmhouse tables! We’re talking the height of the Joanna Gaines/ship-lap everything movement and I wanted in…There was of course still a voice in my head telling me that I was making a mistake and needed to get right back into the perfect teaching job.

I did something very unlike me and I ignored the voice telling me to go back to my ‘stable’ teaching career and I set out to the garage with my trusty teacher (my husband), some YouTube tutorials, and we figured it out. I built my first farmhouse table and it didn’t look too shabby!! I figured all I had to do was sell a couple a month and I’d replace that income I made as a teacher.

Fast forward a few months and some online marketing classes later and I was selling more tables than I ever thought possible! The marketing aspect of selling tables was so intriguing that I ended up investing as much time in my days into that as I could. After several more months, I realized I REALLY liked marketing. Like much more than the table making itself!

Here we are several years later and I own and operate Ads Uncorked LLC, an advertising agency that specializes in Facebook + Instagram Ads for eCommerce clients.

Never in a MILLION years would I have thought I’d be in the place I am. I was supposed to be a math teacher after all!! I was Ms. Play-it-safe at all costs, but it took my world being ripped out from underneath me for me to realize that ‘stability’ is simply a mirage. It doesn’t exist in a 9-5 and it doesn’t exist working for yourself.

I only wish I would’ve known what I know now, which is that taking the risk when I left my job was the best thing that ever could’ve happened to me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I feel like I answered a number of these questions on the first question, but a little more on my business…

My business would not be what it is today without my phenomenal team. Behind the great ad results for my clients is a team of hard-working copywriters, ads managers, graphic designers, and analytic nerds. We work primarily with Shopify stores, and what sets us apart is that we care. No, like we TRULY care about every single one of our clients. We won’t work with clients if we aren’t 100% positive that we are both the right fit for each other and that their business is at a point where it can and will scale with Facebook + Instagram Ads. I see many other agencies out there that are client-hungry, take on everyone and anyone, and clients are taken advantage of. Their clients are passed onto entry level employees or interns, and clients are disappointed with their results. I hear this a LOT from clients who come to us from other agencies.

At the end of the day, we aren’t satisfied with getting results for our clients; we have to get the BEST results possible by testing out everything. We act as an extension of all of our clients, to help them with ads, email marketing, conversion on their website, and anything else they may need.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oooo, this is a fun one!! We’d grab a cup of coffee, lace up our hiking boots and head to the nature preserve near my house that’s along Lake Michigan. After that, we’d come back, grab a bag and head to the local farmer’s market for some scones and a fresh bouquet of flowers. We’d come back home, grab some lunch and head back out a few hours later to go explore the downtown area near my house with little local shops along the river. In the late afternoon we’d go to the beer garden and enjoy a cold one (or two or three) out on the beautiful grassy garden and listen to some live music and order food! We’d end the evening with an outdoor movie downtown!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Jeff, who pushed me to determine what I actually wanted out of my life, rather than playing it ‘safe’.

My kids, Eden and Theo, who have taught me what it means to live my days to the fullest and they’re the reason I slow down and enjoy life as much as I do.
