We had the good fortune of connecting with Jim Floyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jim, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have been fortunate to have owned several businesses and the appeal has always been the same. Independence. Living in the mountains makes a local owned business especially convenient as the commute to Denver becomes more difficult each day.
While working for a local tree service 15 years ago, I noticed a substantial waste of trees simply being chipped up and disposed of. So the opportunity seemed clear. I could begin to salvage the logs and start a firewood business. Before long, one thing led to another and soon I was cutting trees, and mitigating properties as well as distributing firewood.

What should our readers know about your business?
J Wood is truly a “Family” business. I really wasn’t expanding much until my kids joined the team. My son Jesse began working with me part-time in October of 2023. In December of 23, my daughter began work as our marketing director and things took off immediately. For the previous 8 years, J Wood had not advertised at all…only word of mouth. Our business doubled the first year Alex started marketing, and business continues to grow regularly.
It has not always been easy trying to balance the schedule while maintaining the necessary crew, or keeping up with the supply and demand for firewood, but these are generally good problems to have. I’m still learning how to bid jobs accurately. If anything, my estimates tend to favor the customer more than myself, so it’s been an ongoing lesson.
That would be one thing J Wood stands by, a fair price for hard work. We always finish what we start ensuring the client is happy with the work. Our reputation is priority.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a 4th generation Colorado Native, I could go on and on. In the winter, I’d go skiing at Mary Jane and probably take in an Av’s or Nuggets game. In the summer, a concert at Red Rocks, some golf in Evergreen, rafting the Arkansas in Buena Vista, and definitely some beach volleyball at my house.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
J Wood would not be where it is today without the support of my wife Amy, my kids Alex and Jesse, my parents Dennis and Ginny, and my guys Matt and Joe. There have been many other hard working local men and women along the way to whom I am also grateful. I live and work in a wonderful close knit community which I love and respect.
