We had the good fortune of connecting with Jo Johnson Overby and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jo, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
To me, success is a feeling of fulfillment in my day to day. I feel the most successful when I am making a positive impact on others and am able to participate in activities that bring me joy.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business journey has taken me down many avenues. I started my career as a marketing manager for a small boutique, creating all of their online content and photographing all of their product for online retail. During that time I started pursuing wedding photography on the side which quickly led me leaving my marketing job for a five year full time photography career. Enter a global pandemic, I all of the sudden had a lot of free time as weddings were cancelled. Instead of panicking I took that time to start creating content online. As the world started opening back up I went back to photographing weddings but didn’t love it the same way I had before. I photographed 217 weddings before putting my camera down to pursue digital content creation and influencing full time. When I say it like that it sounds like it was all a natural flow but there were definitely obstacles along the way. As challenges presented themselves I learned to pivot into what felt most natural at the time. I’ve found that forcing your journey in the direction you think it’s supposed to go is a guaranteed way to end up stressed and in the wrong place. Rather, I work to trust my gut and allow the plans to change as new information presents itself.

The jump to full time content creation happened in June of 2021 after I had my daughter. I wanted a more flexible schedule that would allow a lot of time dedicated to her. Content creation seemed like just the move since I had already grown a substantial audience, one million followers on TikTok and 100k+ on IG at the time. I dedicated myself to posting consistently and found social media gives an opportunity to build community like we’ve not seen before. I now reach my community in a number of ways including TikTok, IG, Pinterest, and a podcast. I provide entertainment, a firsthand look into new mom life, and so much more. When people run into my content online I want them to sense the transparency and honesty. I want them to feel safe, trusting, and heard. My goal in everything I do is to make a positive impact.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I may be misunderstanding this question, so sorry if that’s the case! I am located in Northwest Arkansas, unsure if you mean my area but if you do…

My best friend comes to town then we are going to coffee at Arsaga’s at Church and Center near the Fayetteville square. After coffee and gourmet toast we are walking to the square to peruse the Fayetteville Farmer’s Market and stop in some of my favorite local shops; Darcy Apparel, Riffraff, City Supply, Block Street Records, and more. Then we head to one of our favorites for lunch maybe Hammontrees, Hugo’s, or Feed & Folly? We sit on the patio enjoy our food and drinks and then head to Rogers because there is live music at the AMP and we don’t want to be late!

There are endless things to explore and checkout:
Crystal Bridges Museum
The Momentary
8th Street Market
Downtown Bentonville
Walmart Museum
Fox Trail Distillery
Devil’s Den for hiking
Mountain Biking Trails
Beaver Lake
Lake Fayetteville
Table Mesa
Onyx Coffee
& more!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My dad has always been my biggest cheerleader. From the time I was a little girl he has stood by the sentiment that I can be or do anything I want. He encouraged me to explore all options and never made me feel like self employment needed to be scary or unattainable.
