We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Rini and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joey, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business was an act of love inspired by the desire to tell beautiful stories and an awareness that I am a self-motivated artist. Throughout my career I have been blessed with a diverse array of opportunities; I have poured myself into passion projects that have only been seen by a select few of my closest friends and family, as well as massive motion picture productions that have played on the big screen and streamed across the world. I hold gratitude for all of these experiences and believe that they have taught me valuable skills that I still use today. That being said, I feel most fulfilled when I connect with a subject, push my creativity, and develop something personal and true to them. The couples that I work with deserve someone who listens to them, sees who they are, and creates something that can be celebrated throughout their marriage. I take that responsibility seriously and with so much gratitude. I can’t think of a better way to use my time.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am learning more about myself and my work every single day. What’s most exciting for me is seeing the different aspects come together into something cohesive. I take a documentary approach to filmmaking which means I am looking for the details to tell the story.

My creative journey began with drawing. Many of my family members are very talented artists, specifically in drawing, painting, and other visual arts. I remember my Grandpa giving me small drawing challenges at a young age, “Can you draw a perfect circle?” he’d show me different techniques and see if I could emulate them. My uncle Jeremy introduced me to drawing characters, understanding proportions, and seeing different shapes to build out a drawing before getting distracted by details. These lessons were constructive and helped instill confidence and curiosity in me from early on.

By the time I got to college I had realized I wanted to work in film. I continued studying drawing, painting, color theory, even music! This education gave me a more well-rounded toolset that allowed me to excel in filmmaking. By the time I graduated, I was already working on professional movies.

Film is such a multi-faceted medium it can feel a bit overwhelming at times. There are many people who choose to focus on just one aspect of it- sound designers, lighting technicians, colorists, set designers, etc. I love being able to learn about all of it. It’s that observational approach to my work that drives this.

I hope that my work stands out and feels creative, but most of all I want it to be true. I want it to feel natural and tell a story.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s probably no surprise but I live here for the natural beauty around! I’d go to the mountains, drink instant coffee in the cold morning and eat rehydrated food out of a bag. I’d swim in the alpine lakes and climb some peaks in the Sawatch Range! This is where I make my best memories, meet the nicest people, and truly feel free to be myself!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I will take every chance I get to thank my fiancée, Nina, for her unconditional love and support. Not only do I get to call her my partner in this business, but also my partner in this beautiful life we have built together. She has been by my side since before this business grew into what it is, through 80-hour weeks on-set, and feeling unmotivated by the corporate grind. She continues to inspire me with her passion and focus for her craft and I would not have made it here without her (and wouldn’t want to!).

I feel so lucky to have such a supportive partner, one who shares my interests and pushes me to never stop learning! Life is about much more than work so being able to enjoy hobbies together is so special to us. I trust her as my climbing partner and she trusts me as her sous-chef (kind of).

This shoutout is for you, my love!
