We had the good fortune of connecting with John Festervand and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
I find great inspiration in listening to motivational speakers, especially during my commute to work. One memorable moment was when I watched a Steve Harvey episode on YouTube where he shared an Albert Einstein quote that resonated with me deeply: “Imagination is everything. It is the preview to life’s coming attraction.” This quote holds a special meaning for me as I have a strong connection with visual thinking, much like Dr. Grandin.

What strikes a chord with me is how Harvey connects this quote to faith, drawing parallels with the scripture: “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” It’s a powerful reminder that God plants unique seeds of imagination in each of us. When he mentioned how not everyone may understand or support our dreams because they are meant for us alone, it truly struck a chord.

I believe that faith is about identifying those special ideas that truly excite us and having the courage to invest fully in them. This principle rings especially true in the realm of philanthropy, where creativity and inspiration are essential in garnering support for our visions. It’s these ideas that drive me and fuel my passion for making a difference.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My entire career has been immersed in the world of universities. When I embarked on this journey, my initial aspirations were to become an athletic director or a university president. Along the way, I learned a valuable lesson – true leadership does not necessarily require holding a formal leadership position. I have had the privilege of contributing to the University of Alabama, Texas Christian University, the University of Mississippi, and I am in my ninth year at Colorado State University. Go Rams!

Several qualities that I believe distinguish me include my unwavering passion for inspiring others, authenticity, curiosity-driven leadership, and genuine care for those around me. Undoubtedly, my upbringing and the values instilled in me by my parents have played a significant role in shaping who I am today. Growing up on college campuses and being exposed to the world from a young age, including memorable experiences traveling abroad, have deeply influenced my perspective and molded my character.

What I want the world to understand about me is that beyond being a compassionate individual, I derive immense satisfaction from being a strategic thought partner. Like Dr. Grandin, we both find purpose in problem-solving. I revel in tackling challenges and pride myself on delving into the intricate layers and nuances of complex issues. I am driven by a genuine desire to contribute to making the world a better place and aspire to be recognized as an innovator, educator, responsible steward of resources, and a talent scout who amplifies others’ stories. My ability to establish meaningful connections, create impactful experiences through storytelling, and foster shared connections is at the core of my approach.

A pivotal life lesson I learned early on, which still resonates with me, is the unpredictability of life’s paths – as the saying goes, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Reflecting on my journey, I realize that the trajectory that led me to where I am today, advocating for those in need and even producing a documentary film, was not something I could have foreseen and it’s him whom I owe any amount of success I have had along the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Typically when friends comes to visit, I always start by picking them up from the airport and we head straight to CSU’s Spur campus for a tour of the Temple Grandin Equine Center. It’s an experience that never fails to impress, showcasing the incredible work and beautiful horses housed there. On our ride to Fort Collins stopping at Bucee’s for some snacks and goodies is an experience by itself.

Being a big fan of showcasing CSU and the Fort Collins area, I love taking my friends for a stroll through Old Town after a campus tour. There are so many charming spots and great restaurants to choose from. Given Fort Collins’ reputation as a craft beer haven, we usually find a local watering hole for some relaxed fun like playing darts or cornhole. For dinner, I can’t resist showing off my cooking skills by grilling some delicious steaks from Ram Country Meats. My black truffle reverse sear steak is hard to beat!

A day trip to Estes Park is a must-do depending on our schedule. I also enjoy starting the day early with fishing from my kayak at Horsetooth Reservoir or one of the many ponds around town. The serene beauty of the early morning surroundings never fails to impress me or my guests.

I also love taking guests to Red Feather Lakes for an off-the-beaten-path experience. The scenic drive alone is worth it, and we always make a stop at Mishawaka for a sandwich or drink on our way back. It’s the ideal way to wrap up a day full of exploration and discovery northern Colorado.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Firstly, I owe a tremendous debt of thanks to Dr. Temple Grandin for not only being an exceptional colleague but also for the unique friendship we have cultivated over the years. The privilege of sharing her inspiring story in a new light has been a true honor.

Next, I must acknowledge our Director, John Barnhardt, whose unparalleled expertise in filmmaking, technical prowess, and storytelling acumen set him apart as one of the finest storytellers I have ever known. His guidance and mentorship have been invaluable to me, and many other students as well as aspiring film makers.

A special mention goes out to Colorado State University and the College of Agricultural Sciences, particularly Dr. James Pritchett, whose unwavering belief in my abilities and trust in me has grown my confidence in unexpected ways. I am forever grateful for the opportunities he has given me to grow and excel.

I cannot overlook the immense support and love I receive from my family, my work family at the college and, most importantly, my rock at home – my wife and best friend, Shevaun, and our two children, JJ and Audrey. They are my everything, and I draw endless strength and motivation from their unwavering support.

In essence, my journey is a tapestry woven with the threads of wisdom, guidance, and love from these exceptional individuals and institutions. They have shaped me into the person I am today, and for that, I am eternally thankful.
