We had the good fortune of connecting with Johna Pink and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Johna, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always wanted to pursue something that would allow me to work for myself while doing something I enjoyed. I own horses and when I started searching for specific gear for them I found things that are overpriced, poor quality or only came in black. Being the type of person that is rough on gear (and who has horses who are even rougher), these low quality items just weren’t cutting it. I decided that creating these things myself out of high quality materials and with a variety of color options was my best choice. The materials I purchase to make these items are sourced from another small business and it is amazing to be apart of small businesses both as a distributor and a consumer.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Nothing about starting a business with no previous experience is “easy” but when it is something you’re passionate about you make it work. I hand make every item; halters, reins, dog leashes, etc. Knowing that they will make people happy and last for a long time make it worth the moments where I’m in pain from sitting so long working on orders, or missing some time with my kiddo.

Along the way I’ve learned to always triple check orders, make sure everything I knotted the way it should be and in its correct place. It may take me longer, but quality is the most important aspect of the things I make and I am not willing to negotiate on that! You’ve also gotta be flexible, there’s been multiple times someone has asked me to make something I’ve never made before. A few of those items have ended up on my website as regular things and are pretty popular!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As long as the weather was good, we would head to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. It is one of my favorite spots in the city and the best zoo I’ve ever been to. If you head to the grizzly bear exhibit at 230pm on most days you get to see them up close because they’re getting their afternoon snacks! Assuming we were kid free, The Dublin House is a great place to go to end the night. Drinks and karaoke is never a bad time in my friend group!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My friends are absolutely amazing and have been incredibly supportive in my journey. They don’t hesitate to drop my business, share posts and tag people when they are looking for things I carry. They’ve also all made multiple purchases which has been a huge help in getting this going. People don’t understand how much they can impact a small business by sharing, liking and buying one little thing!
