Meet Johnny Draco

We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnny Draco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnny, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Balance has always been an important part of my life. Since I take on many forms of art, it’s crucial for me to manage my creative energy so I don’t burn out. In the past, I would lock in on one thing, whether it was toy design, graphic design, or painting, but that kind of tunnel vision often left me drained and almost paralyzed creatively. Over time, I learned that giving myself the freedom to move between different disciplines not only kept me curious but also helped me regain momentum whenever I felt stuck. That shift in balance has allowed me to sustain my creativity instead of exhausting it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets my work apart are the themes I explore and the type of art I create. I am not making work for clout or attention but because creating is something that feels necessary to me. My practice often reflects identity, heritage, and the balance between tradition and the contemporary world, which gives each piece a deeper purpose.
The path has not been easy and in many ways I am still on the journey. There have been setbacks, times of doubt, and challenges in balancing life and art, but those moments taught me resilience and a stronger sense of commitment. One of the most important lessons I have learned is that staying consistent and authentic carries more weight than following trends.
What I want people to know about my work is that it is intentional and part of a larger story I am building. Each piece is made to spark reflection and conversation, and to contribute something meaningful beyond just the surface.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It would be a mix of art, the outdoors, and good food. Whenever I have visitors, I like to create an experience that feels like a tour of Denver’s culture through its neighborhoods. I would start in RiNo to explore the art and creative energy, then head to the mountains for some time outdoors. After that we could spend a day in the Highlands and then settle into South Broadway for its food and nightlife. Some of my favorite spots include Meadowlark, Sap Sau, Mak Fam, Bamboo Sushi, Ramen Star, and Sushi Den.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The people who deserve the most credit are my friends, my family, and the art community I’ve become a part of here in Denver. There are so many amazing people who have supported me in ways I never could have imagined. Their encouragement has pushed me further than I thought possible. I’m grateful for everyone, from the people I see every day to those I simply cross paths with. All of them have played a role in shaping my journey.
