We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Pederson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, how do you think about risk?
Risk scares me. I’m an introvert, perfectly happy in my daily routine, with my immediate family and friends and the comfort of my normal ‘bubble.’ If you asked those that knew me if I’d ever be the first to take a risk and skydive, or move to a place I’ve never been- they’d probably laugh at you for even asking. However last year at the beginning of the pandemic, like many, my mindset shifted with things such as the importance of taking risk. For 5 years I was a manager at Nordstrom and I loved it. Fashion and helping others feel confident and beautiful with their fashion choices has always been a passion of mine. As an avid Nordstrom shopper since, well the womb, it was a no brainer to pursue a career there. And it was lining up to be a great career. No risk, it was steady, it was solid. Then we shut down: I was forced to lay off half of my employees, my hours as a manager went up while my pay was sliced by 70%, we closed 16 stores- and for the first time I realized my safety bubble wasn’t so safe anymore.

I’ve always had an interest in Real Estate, however, it’s common knowledge that Real Estate is risky- there’s no guarantee of clients, of homes to sell, of a paycheck. For years I’ve said I wanted to switch to being a Realtor, but there was no stability there and how scary would it be to switch careers, knowing nothing about the industry, and having NO guarantee I could make any money? But when Covid hit and I realized Nordstrom was not the reliable career I may have thought it was- for the first time in my life I decided it would be worth it to risk it all and jump ship- try a new career that I’ve always wanted. What better time than now, when I likely could be laid off any day anyways? It ended up being the biggest risk I’ve ever taken, but also the most rewarding.

I quit Nordstrom, started online schooling for Real Estate, studied non stop and was licensed within 3 months. I was hired by a great local brokerage, 8Z Real Estate, and took off running. After getting licensed, I was more scared than ever. I knew I was in a great place with excellent mentors and training, however it was still looming that I needed to grow a client base- just because I learned how to sell houses didn’t mean I would. And the first few months I didn’t have anything lined up- no paycheck, no clients, nothing in the pipeline. I began really questioning the risk I took and if it was worth it, but I kept my nose to the ground and kept doing everything I could, and then I just took off. I’m now officially one year in and about to hit $10Million, I’ve already surpassed my Nordstrom salary by a long shot, and have a great client base. I keep thinking about how scared I was to take the risk of doing something new and unknown to me- and being so thankful I did. I always come back to the quote “your biggest risk will always be the one you don’t take.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a full time Realtor, servicing Boulder and the entire Front Range. I’m a Boulder native, so I have a passion for Boulder, and Colorado in general that helps me as a Realtor. I pride myself on my connections with my clients, and that I truly am not trying to help sell them just a physical house, but I’m here to help them find roots, join a community, and build a home. I’m proud of taking the risk to jump into real estate, especially in this crazy market- and how successful I’ve been in a short period of time. I have to credit my previous career at Nordstrom for setting me up for success as well, because it’s been engrained in me the ‘client first, customer obsessed’ mentality- I simply love helping others and make sure they feel like the most important person in my life when I help them. As a newer, younger agent, I’ve had to rely on the things I know set me apart- my knowledge of Colorado (as a resident, not just statistical knowledge), my customer service skills and my problem solving mentality, to know that I can hold my own against veteran agents, and do just as great of a job with my clients. I also view every client I get the pleasure of helping as a relationship, not a transaction. I feel like that personal aspect is often missing in this industry and I make sure my clients always know I want to be their friend, and walk alongside them in the journey- and not just be a salesperson. As a Realtor, I want my ‘brand’ to be that I’m personable and fun, while also extremely knowledgable and able to correctly guide them through this process.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First and foremost I would take them hiking! There truly is no better way to experience Colorado than hiking in the beautiful mountains. I grew up with the Flatirons, literally, in my backyard- so I’m partial to the trails in South Boulder that run along the Flatirons. However I would also take them to Hanging Lake and Maroon Bells- typical tourist spots I know- but I think those are two of the most beautiful spots in the state. As for food- wow, we have so many great choices! Breakfast would be at Southside Walnut Cafe in South Boulder, or The Buff in Boulder. For lunch, I would take them to Lodo’s rooftop in Westminster, The Rio rooftop in Boulder, or Avanti rooftop in Boulder. Anywhere with a rooftop, essentially! If we were doing a sit down, fancy dinner- Carelli’s in South Boulder for sure! However just about any place on Pearl Street Mall, or in Downtown Denver would be where I would take someone. I think anyone visiting needs to see: Pearl Street, Red Rocks, a hiking trail, (if it’s fall) one of the scenic roads for leaf peeping, a ski town, and go to a game at Coors field at sunset!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout my husband, Johnny, for supporting my risk taking in my career and being by my side, encouraging me, every step of the way.
