We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Fairmont and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I am a firm believer that if you don’t take risks, you won’t learn or grow. The biggest lessons I’ve learned in life have been from taking risks that failed, and the biggest strides I’ve made in my career have been from taking risks that panned out. When you take a risk on something in your career an works out, it makes it 100 more times satisfying and meaningful. I think it is also important to take calculated risks and examine them from all angles beofore making a decision, there is a difference between beeing careless and taking risks. Risks need to be somewhat calculated and throughly considered before acting upon.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what I am most proud of is my ambition. It can be quite intimidating working in film and trying to get projects approved and following through on ideas. The easiest thing to do is to give up and quit, I try to put 100% into everything and just go for it. I got to where I am today by being persistent and always looking for new opportunities, however I still have a long way to go. It’s important to say yes to any opportunity that arises, because the best way to learn is through hands on experience. An important thing I have learned over the years is that people are more willing to help you than you might think. You’ll be surprised how many people will say yes to you, and want to help you if you simple just reach out and express interest in what they are doing. I try to reach out to as many people as possible that I think I can learn from. No matter how big they are it never hurts to ask, the worst they can say is no and if they say yes it might change your life, and that is a small risk worth taking.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love ice cream so my number one priority is always bring people to my favorite ice cream spot, Sweet Cow. Bartaco is where I would probably take them for food. And whenever someone comes to Boulder for the first time you have to show them the flatirons, so I would probably take them on some hikes around there. During the day it’s always fun get outside, I like heading up towards Lyons and going for some mountain bike rides. If there are any concerts happening I think one of the most fun things you can do is go see some live music at Red Rocks.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shout out definitely has to be to Bobby Brown and Peter Brown. Bobby is one of the worlds best professional skiers and his brother Peter is his filmer and media guy. Growing up Bobby was my favorite skier and I was always watching the videos him and Peter were making. My senior year in high school I got in touch with them, and without even meeting me they took me in, and allowed me to film a project with them and live with them for a week. From there the relationship grew and we’ve continued to work together every year since. Peter especially has taught me a lot on the camera side and allowed me to make endless connections with people in the industry, and go on shoots that I dreamed about as a kid. If it wasn’t for Bobby and Peter I don’t think I would have found the same passion for filming that I have today, and definitely would not have the same opportunities that I’ve had.
