We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin & Tyler Fukae and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin & Tyler, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
We really wanted to make sure that the efforts that we put into the business are meaningful not only to us but to the community we serve. That is why we decided to source 100% of our products from local artists, makers, and producers to support the local business owners as well as reduce our carbon footprint. We also started a bulk refill program for the local community to fill up on various household cleaners, skincare products, shampoo, and accessories to help support those who wish to live more sustainably while also supporting local businesses.
We are always looking for ways to do better for the planet and for our community. We are currently working on our Green Certification with the City and County of Denver and implementing a recycling program for hard-to-recycle items.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
With an abundance of options, we simplify the shopping experience by bringing you 100% Colorado-sourced products. We work hard to curate high-quality, sustainable, and beautiful products to bring you the best of what Colorado has to offer!
We are an LGBTQ+, Veteran, and AAPI owned business.
It was certainly not an easy process to get to where we are today and we are still working hard every single day to ensure our business is successful and meaningful to both ourselves and the community we serve. Before moving to Denver, we lived in Louisiana, Oklahoma, Washington DC, and Alaska working a variety of jobs and going to school with no clear idea of what we wanted our lives to look like. Moving and settling in Denver during the peak of the pandemic, it gave us a lot of time to reflect and ruminate on what we wanted our lives to look like. Starting something on our own and together was a dream that finally was within our reach, so we went for it! This first year in business, I was working full-time at a private company, while Justin focused on the day-to-day operations of the business, so suffice it to say that we did not have much time for ourselves. We eventually found a better work-life balance and the move to Denver has been a tremendous help in achieving a better balance.
The biggest lessons we learned along the way –
1 – communication is essential to ensure cohesion and a successful execution of the vision for the business
2 – Owning a business takes a lot of your time and your heart. While it is extremely fulfilling at times, there is also a lot of failures and obstacles you have to work through along the way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend were visiting, I would take them up into the mountains to explore the beautiful nature Colorado has to offer. I personally love going up to Guanella Pass as it reminds us a lot of Alaska and there are just so many trails and sights along the way. Also a great way to experience nature without having to get out of the car for those who are not as physically abled.
Safta is also a favorite restaurant to visit with guests. Justin and I both loved going to Shaya and Saba in New Orleans which is where the head chef and owner of Safta started out. Unlimited freshly baked pita with the most amazing Israeli dishes. Great for both vegetarians and meat lovers.
Denver is also home to tons of great farmers market’s so we would definitely plan on checking out some of those.
One of my all-time favorite, must go to places is the Denver Botanic Gardens. We have a membership so that we can visit whenever we want and easily take people in with us when they visit. We have visited many botanic gardens across the country and this is probably our favorite one. It just has such a diversity of plants and there is so much to discover all year round.
Lady Justice Brewing is also a brewery I’ve been wanting to check out. It’s a woman owned and operated brewery out on East Colfax and I love their mission and the work they have been doing!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Kayla and Isaiah at the Barking Loop in Georgetown, CO! If it were not for their willingness to talk with us and share their insights on starting a business, we may not be here today!
