We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Comba and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karen, what do you attribute your success to?
Addressing Mental Health. I had a mother with Schizophrenia. I wrote memoir from the child’s point of view. I wrote knowing I had to create a platform for my mission to help all children in the world regarding mental illness of every type. I am driven to bring solutions not just talking about this important subject. Now, I am working with NAMI president in Colorado and we are moving forward to bring change to our youth. This will be my success and is my success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As Author, International Speaker and upcoming TV host my journey has been a lifetime. What sets me apart at the age of 65 is I decided I had to do something to bring solutions to our youth regarding all this mental health issues. I knew I had to put myself out there for the world to see so they would understand I so know what I am talking about. So, I wrote my memoir raw as hell. I have always been the person out of the box. With my husband’s blessings I hired publishing company and got my story in a book. Then I hired publicists, they landed my endorsement from Wally Lamb, and then I hired David Fagan who believed in me and now article in USA Today, featured in Los Angeles Tribune, Nasdaq and speaking Internationally. I have spoken to High Schools also supporting CAYS. I keep going every day. I know solutions are needed not just talking about it. So, I have joined up with NAMI president in Colorado and we are on the path of creating a program for a test pilot in some schools in our state. I know this will make a difference and then the program will be offered to all schools around the world. My main support at first stared with my dear friend founder of Love & Logic Jim Fay. Has this been easy, no I have been working on this for 12 years. Turth be known I have wanted this my whole life. I knew there were families out there just like ours. I feel like I was choosen to do this. I had to live through my life in order to help others.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to town, I would take them to Red Rocks to a concert if its summertime. If its wintertime, then up into the Colorado mountains for some snow shoeing. I love to eat at sports bars where the town is small, and you can hang with local people. Thats the best. 🙂 I love Golden Colorado and little Mountain Towns. I have to say a Golf game is in order. I love all people so everywhere is the best place.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, Wally Lamb for writing his endorsement for my story. Jim Fay Founder of Love & Logic Institute writing my forward. My family for staying strong through our mother’s illness. My husband and children for all there support and love knowing I have a mission to help all youth. Los Angeles Tribune for featuring me along with USA Today.
