We had the good fortune of connecting with Karissa Layne Photography and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karissa Layne Photography, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I believe that life is too short to work a job that you don’t absolutely love! It was not so easy to come to that conclusion, though! While I always absolutely LOVED photography and also loved the idea of working for myself, I was working another job and just did not think it was possible for me to pursue my dream full-time. It seemed like such a big risk at the time to leave everything I knew, had studied in college for, etc. and I was honestly so scared of the unknown. But I had a lot of support and encouragement and most importantly, I knew that God was calling me to it. So I had to trust and at least give it a try! Best decision of my life and I have not looked back. It is so cool that as a business owner, I can do something I love every single day, that I am passionate about, and that brings me so much joy, but even more importantly, I can really serve and love others.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am primarily a wedding, elopement, and couples photographer. It is literally my job to capture joy and love – seriously that is the best job ever! I believe what sets me apart from others in this industry is my incredibly intentional approach to documenting joy and love. There is so much more to my work than just taking photos. I form relationships with my clients and I help them throughout their wedding planning process – For example, I send out a 75 page wedding guide full of tips, I help them write their timeline, etc. but most importantly, this ultimately helps them to be present and focus on what matters. All of this (along with my fun, easy going, candid approach) helps cultivate a super comfortable environment for my clients to be themselves and forget I even have a camera in my hand. When I am with my couples, I am really looking for exactly what it is that makes them unique, as individuals, and as a couple becoming one. I am simply telling their story… How does she best show her love to him, what is his favorite thing about her, how do they best fit in each other’s arms, what makes them happy. I get to show them how incredibly beautiful and loved THEY are. Every single couple and day is going to look different in its own perfect way. This is also what defines my style as I try to capture everything as “true to life, color, and emotion.” In a pretty saturated market, it is all the more important to find out what sets you apart and focus on serving your people the best that you can. It is not always easy but I would really encourage business owners to be yourself as much as possible because there are people who need YOU! As I have been able to find my unique brand, voice, and style, AND have learned to not care what others in the industry think about me (my work is for my clients… not for impressing others) that has helped me find success and also so much purpose.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the beautiful mountains and the sunshine, so we would spend lots of time exploring the great outdoors! We would definitely take a couple day trips up I70 to hike in the mountains (I would choose which ones depending on the time of year, but there are so many!) After a day of hiking, we would go get pizza at Beau Jo’s. We would also spend some time walking around downtown, getting some coffee, supporting some local shops, getting ice cream at Little Man, maybe go to a Broncos or Rockies game if they are in season…and of course we would eat lots of green chili. 🙂

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh my goodness, I would not be where I am without the help of others. I was scared to pursue this crazy dream, but my husband, Tim, was so incredibly supportive and encouraging. While I had thoughts like, “What if I fail?” He responded with things like, “But what if you succeed?” Honestly, the biggest and best mindset shift(s) that anyone can have! Also, my entire family was and continues to be super supportive which is amazing. I also owe credit to my photography family – photography runs in my family for 4 generations! So thankfully, I got passed down that love and talent, and it has been awesome to have that mentorship as well. Most importantly, God called me to this business, gave me clear direction, opened up doors for me, and is definitely the reason that I am doing this and able to do it well.
