We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Gontaruk Joe Kalicki and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kat Gontaruk, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It’s an interesting story… our business was actually a Meetup group at first. The group was created to unite people to go to EDM shows together, with the mentality of “no one should have to go to a show alone”. We would have Meetups for all the major shows happening in Denver up until COVID started. It was that summer, a year after the group was founded, that we began to think of having our own show, and with that came the formulation of our business, Denver EDM Fam LLC.
We began to organize our own events, with our vision, centered around bringing people together with a few simple principles founded in inclusivity and PLUR: Peace, Love, Unity, Respect. We created a Facebook page and group, and it’s a very engaging group, which we have built with intention to really create a community for our fam.
We never did it for money, and never will. Our passions are deep rooted in making people happy, creating new friendships, connecting people in the industry, bringing a unique experience at our Meetups and events that make people feel welcome and experience some of the best times of their lives.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets us apart from others is that we believe in inclusivity and want to bring people together, we are nice people, and we are professional to work with. A lot of the EDM industry is actually really divisive and does not accept other groups or people who like a certain type of EDM. We try to encompass almost every type of EDM, and welcome people of all walks of life as long as they agree to abide by our community rules. Something else that sets us apart is that we really care about having an engaging group where members feel comfortable to be themselves in a safe space, find lots of kind people to interact with, and enjoy events that are really personal and have a fam vibe.
We’ve been able to achieve a lot with our Facebook group. In the last 2 months we’ve grown over 70%, making our group over 6K members now. What we’ve learned along the way is that our community is really excited to have events back and appreciates an engaging community to be, where the organizers truly care. We’ve also learned a lot ourselves, with respect to event preparation, promotion, networking, and growing our business and fam. We are so excited about the events we have planned over the rest of the year!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Here’s our recommendations for concert goers coming to Denver to check our a show or festival, and see what this city has to offer!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We definitely want to give a shoutout to everyone who has supported us along the way… our support team, the DJs who has performed for us, our fam, and everyone in our direct circles of friends and family who have believed in us.
Joe : I would like to give a special shoutout. Sean, my EDM mentor. Harrison, my very good friend who has a similar business. And Kat, my fiance, for the inspiration to go out of my shell.
Kat : I would like to give a shoutout to a few special people. My mom, who has always supported me in anything I wanted to do. Joe, my fiance, for stepping up as a co-leader with me, helping us create an engaging community, and always having my back. And to every single fam member who has expressed to Joe or I what it means to them to be in this group, every time it propels us further.
