We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Sonner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kat, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

When I decided to be a hairdresser who work for myself it was because I wanted time freedom and creative freedom.

I wanted to be able to work hours that fit the needs of my family, make a good living and be happy while doing it. I didn’t want to be tied down to quotas and weekly hour expectations.

I don’t really think true work/life balance exists, haha, but I do think by working this way I have been able to cultivate a career that can adapt in ever changing life and work seasons.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

Ultimately, my goal behind the chair is to provide luxury beauty services that work for a woman who’s always on the go and can’t spend 4+ hours in the salon.

I like to use color techniques that I have refined over the last 16 years, so that my clients are in and out and on with their lives.

I want to always be able to offer high quality services so I am always learning new things when it comes to the art of hair extensions, color and cuts.

I don’t just “do hair”.  How my clients feel between their hair appointments is important to me. I love running my small independent beauty business! Sure it isn’t always easy managing myself, haha…  but it’s definitely worth it. I’ve spent many days/months wondering if I’m doing this right. But having other business owner friends to bounce ideas off of has helped me keep going.

Thanks to life circumstances and such I’ve definitely had to adjust my expectations and scale back my goals multiple times, but with hard work and lots of support I know I will get where I truly want to be sooner rather than later! And I am so excited for that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Actually by best friend will be here in a few weeks and I plan to do just that!!

I think we will checkout one or two of the beautiful trails in Colorado springs, like Helen hunt falls or Painted mines.

I will take her to some of my favorite shops to pick up some goodies like the amazing bath bombs at Remedy Farms, and the fun collective stores with lots of unique items Downtown.

For food I’m definitely treating her to a meal at White Pie, Urban egg, and also dessert/coffee at Decadent Dessert and Coffee bar.

Also of course we will spend and afternoon in the salon so she can head back home with a fresh balayage and haircut.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

My husband!! Joe has always been supportive of my desire to be a luxury hairstylist, sometimes I need that extra support and I’m grateful to have him in my corner.

Additionally, my friend and fellow stylist Kelli Stephenson.  She for introduced me to the world of business coaching for hairstylists. And that helped me find my stride and confidence behind the chair.
