We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Penn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kate, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued an artistic career because the arts have always been the most meaningful way for me to connect with the world around me. From a young age, I was deeply drawn to creative spaces. Art classes, theater, dance, art history, drawing, and creating in general, these were the environments where I felt most engaged and fulfilled.

At 19, I realized that pursuing a career in the arts was not only possible, but essential for me. I started my own graphic design business and quickly found myself creating logos for small businesses and individuals starting their own ventures. Through this work, I discovered how powerful art can be as a tool for connection and community.

That sense of connection has grown even stronger since I began tattooing at 23. Creating meaningful, permanent artwork for my clients has been incredibly moving and deeply rewarding. This career allows me to express myself artistically while providing a meaningful service. I am constantly growing and learning as an artist. After seeing the impact my work can have on people’s confidence, self-love, and lives, I truly cannot imagine pursuing any path outside of the arts.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I got to where I am business-wise through a process of trying, failing, observing, learning, and constantly adjusting. The path was not easy, but it has been absolutely worth it. My 2.5 year apprenticeship was only the beginning of my learning journey. Since then, I’ve continued to grow by getting tattooed by other artists and experiencing the process from a client’s perspective, learning what feels supportive, what doesn’t, and what makes an experience exceptional. I bring those insights directly into my own practice to provide the best possible experience for my clients.

Tattooing is only one part of the job title “tattoo artist.” We are also business owners, custom artists, schedulers, administrative workers, and social media managers. We are responsible for maintaining safe, clean, and hygienic practices while simultaneously creating a smooth, comforting, and welcoming environment for clients who may be feeling nervous, vulnerable, or in pain. Balancing all of these roles has taught me discipline, empathy, and the importance of clear communication before, during, & after the appointment.

What sets my business apart is the level of care I put into each individual client’s vision and experience. I prioritize comprehensive booking, timely and straightforward communication, clear pricing, and concise answers so clients know exactly what to expect. Artistically, my work is defined by a unique blend of blackwork, illustrative, and ornamental tattooing, with a focus on natural themes such as flora, fauna, insects, and natural symmetry. By honing in on this style, I am able to continually deepen my skill set and grow with every piece I create.

What I want the world to know about my brand is that it is built on intention, trust, and care. My goal is not only to create meaningful artwork, but to offer an experience where clients feel heard, respected, and confident both during the process and long after they leave their appointment.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Fort Collins has no shortage of great food, experiences, and outdoor spaces, so showing a friend around would be easy! I’d start mornings with a matcha and a gluten-free pastry at Explorado, then grab tacos at Uno Más or sushi at Japango. For something sweet, Edison’s Ice Cream would absolutely be on the list.

We’d spend plenty of time outside, paddleboarding and swimming at Horsetooth Reservoir, birdwatching, and soaking up the scenery. I’d also take them up to the Mishawaka Amphitheatre and along the Poudre River, whether it’s for a show, a walk, or just hanging out by the water. We’d have to catch a show at The Comedy Fort for a fun night out. Between the food, nature, and local spots, Fort Collins offers the perfect balance of relaxed and exciting.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my clients and the community that continues to trust me. Your openness and support are the foundation of my work, and I am endlessly grateful for the experiences we have shared.

I also want to acknowledge the tattooers I’ve met and worked alongside over the years, who have shared their knowledge, experience, and love for tattooing with me. Learning from such talented artists has shaped not only my tattooing practice, but the way I approach each client’s individual experience.
