Meet Kathryn Kurtz | Interior Designer + Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathryn Kurtz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kathryn, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Interior design is more technical and multifaceted than most people realize. While we enjoy the perception of being creative and stylish trendsetters, we are also meticulous project managers and advocates for public health and safety. We are well-versed in construction methods, codes, and the technical aspects of the materials, fixtures, and products we specify.
What should our readers know about your business?
At K Squared Design Studio, we offer a full range of services to meet a client’s design needs. We have a clear process to guide homeowners through the design journey, ensuring a solution that feels authentic to them. Our process allows plenty of room for creativity while maintaining a structured timeline and defined goals, so homeowners always know what to expect next. We are a highly creative and technical studio, with extensive knowledge of home construction, materials, furniture, and décor. We pride ourselves on making a space functional before focusing on aesthetics, and we love how our designs transform the way clients interact with their homes, making daily life easier and more joyful.
I am where I am today because I’ve remained open to learning, understanding that it is vital for both personal and business growth. The ability to course-correct when something isn’t working is essential in business. I also have many industry peers who help answer my endless, detailed questions about the nuances of design, construction, and business. I try to be vulnerable, open, and see missteps as opportunities for learning and growth.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If possible, I encourage my friends to visit during FOCO MX, my favorite music event in Fort Collins. I’ve never experienced anything quite like it. It takes place just as the weather starts to warm, and people are eager to be outdoors. The energy in town comes alive as people wander from venue to venue, discovering new music and bumping into old friends.
For a place to stay, I love recommending The Elizabeth Hotel. This hotel truly embodies the spirit of Fort Collins with its two bars—The Magic Rat and The Sunset Lounge—and its gorgeous restaurant, The Emporium. The design of the space is a blend of classic, edgy, and fun. Every hotel room has a record player, and there’s even a record “store” in the lobby where you can borrow records.
For coffee, I always send friends to Lima Coffee Roasters, a frequent stop for our studio. The staff is amazing, and the coffee is strong and delicious. The atmosphere is lively and always bustling.
For entertainment, I recommend The Lyric, a local movie theater with a unique environment and lots of activities. They host a fantastic outdoor movie series in the summer and serve great food. The Lyric also supports local musicians and artists, embracing the quirky and fun—and everyone is welcome. My favorite event is Cat Video Fest, where they simply show cat videos as a feature “film”—it’s an absolute blast!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shout-out to my incredible clients. I have the most fun, loving, and conscientious clients, and I am so grateful to each and every one of them for trusting my studio to make a positive impact on their lives.
