We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Cone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I began teaching privately during my senior year of high school. I didn’t know I’d actually end up sticking with it, almost a decade later! My business started out humbly, teaching different instruments to kids in my neighborhood. As I continued to develop myself as a singer-songwriter in college, I fell more in love with the science behind singing. When covid hit, my business shifted to solely online. I started targeting to more voice students, with a switch to my business name: The Vocal Fix. Like any journey, it hasn’t been easy but I’m grateful to be coaching both unsigned and signed artists throughout the country.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being a voice coach as well as a singer-songwriter has helped me understand a bit more the demands some of my clients have. Helping them warm up for a six hour studio day to preparing for headline tours, it’s my goal to give them all the insight on the best ways to protect their voice and keep it healthy. So much can impact a voice such as too little sleep, dehydration, and even one’s mood.

Speaking of protecting your voice and making sure it’s warmed up, I recently came out with my “Everyday Vocal Warmup” series. If you’re a singer, public speaker, or anyone who uses their voice a lot, feel free to check it out on my website!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Such a fun question! Well we’d obviously have to head up to Evergreen and eat some lunch at Willow Creek. We’d spend some time shopping in the town, hiking, getting some ice cream, and paddle boarding Evergreen lake.

Being able to hike new spots in the mountains with a phone free day, fresh air, and good company is win!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to get a voice coaching certification from New York Vocal Coaching. I gained so much more insight on vocal anatomy and health, teaching styles, how to “diagnose” common singing problems, and learned how to create my own vocal exercises to help each unique singer.
