We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think about risk taking as one of the best things you can do for yourself. Taking risks (big or small) allows you to push yourself and opens up a world of opportunities. I was working in retail before I began my career as a landscape designer, and the big reason I am where I am today is because I took a risk. I asked one of my “regulars” for a job opportunity at a local landscaping company in the town where I lived at the time. That was nearly 10 years ago! Now I’m proud to say run my own landscape construction company here in Denver, CO.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Emerging from Denver, Colorado, Katie Young is the owner of a landscape design and construction company. Her business specializes in designing & building patios, outdoor kitchens, fire/water features, and more. Katie began her career nearly 10 years ago as an office manager for a small landscape company in east Texas. She quickly realized her passion for design, and over time has crafted her skills. After wearing many hats over the years of working for several small landscape companies, Katie knew it was time to begin her own company Colorado Custom Outdoor Living & Landscaping.

Katie specializes in designing landscapes that support both her clients’ lifestyles, as well as the Colorado ecosystem. Drought tolerant, native Colorado plants are regularly used in her planting designs. She continuously educates herself on new techniques, resources, and technologies that are emerging in order to best execute her craft. A nature lover at heart, Katie is truly passionate about creating an outdoor oasis that her clients will enjoy for years. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Of course, the Rocky Mountains are a must, We would start the day out with a moderate hike, and then head the Idaho Springs for Beau Jo’s to eat lunch. Then, we would explore the Peak to Peak highway, eventually making it to Rocky Mountain National Park. As expected, we would see Elk roaming the streets and we’d stop by the Stanley Hotel. We would spend the day enjoying the fresh mountain air as the sun radiates our faces, maybe stop by the local brewery. On the next day, we would roam through Rhino Art District, eat some local grub (Highland Tavern has the best burgers), and head to Red Rocks for a concert!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my husband, Cary. He is my biggest supporter (he has to listen to me talk plants all day), and my business mentor. With many years of business experience under his own belt, there is no situation I could bring him that he wouldn’t have the answer for. Through stressful seasons, and late nights, Cary has given me the support to thrive on my business journey! I love you!
