We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Eickmann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
If people haven’t worked in the food industry and specifically the pastry industry, people don’t understand the time and effort that goes into it. When I tell people I decorate cakes and cookies all they think is, “oh that’s an awesome hobby.” Well sure it can be a hobby for some, but for me it’s a career. And it’s a lot of work; more than people realize.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I have always wanted to be an artist, but early on I knew it wasn’t going to go anywhere. I am a creative person just in general and art was my favorite class in school. I also loved scrapbooking, make cards with my mom, pottery, painting, drawing, anything artistic.

I will say my road was not easy. I was let down many times because I didn’t have the experience they were looking for. I felt like I wasn’t good enough at times, and I am still very hard on myself because I’m a perfectionist.

I get looked at differently sometimes because I don’t look my age. And they don’t always take me seriously because of that. But I try not to get discouraged. I’ve learned that I can’t meet everyone’s needs and that’s okay. I have also learned that I am not everyone’s cup of tea and that’s okay. There are so many people out there that will see my worth.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

I have lived in Colorado my whole life, and I have yet to go skiing or snowboarding. So, I wouldn’t be the best person to show a friend where all the good spots are. But if I had to choose based on what I have done or had I would say Evergreen Lake is my spot. It’s just short drive up in the mountains. There’s a restaurant and a coffee place up there that are amazing. Every time I go up there, I get coffee and walk around the lake. It’s always so quiet and the people are so nice up there. It’s a nice change for a day trip.

Coffee– Everbean; Restaurant–Willow Creek

If you love white river rafting, canon city is, in my eyes the best place to go for that. There’s also the royal gorge up there; and it’s all around beautiful up there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my mom. She has always had by back even in the hard times not only in my journey, but in hers as well. I would also like to give credit to my boyfriend, Sebastian. We have been together for almost 10 years now and he has always pushed me and gives me encouragement when I am down about something that didn’t go as planned. Which happened a lot! And from late nights of talking about strategies on how to improve or discovering new ideas, he always as my back.
