We had the good fortune of connecting with Keisha Mathes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keisha, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Over time my balance has shifted so that I can be more present with my family and myself. I used to work countless hours a week, but now I am more intentional with my time. It takes less time to complete tasks and projects when you are specific and directed. I had to reconfigure how I do business so that business wasn’t all I had time for. Balance is one of the keys to success. If you aren’t getting what you need your business and family will ultimately suffer.

What should our readers know about your business?

Getting Herbal Honey to the point of actualization was a long road. What makes me proud of my business is that I did it despite the fear, and depression. When I started my business in 2018 it was in direct defiance to the lie I had been living under for a decade. In 2008 I was in an abusive marriage and was denied the right and option to pursue my dream. In 2011 I filed for divorce after having spent half my life in that abusive relationship. I spent several years rebuilding myself and my life. As a business owner and poet I have been able to help friends, family and strangers to achieve greater degrees of wellness and an improved quality of life. I am grateful to be in a position to help and inspire others. Whether I am formulating, performing or giving my time through volunteering I am living such a full life. Along the way I have learned what true forgiveness looks like, the benefits of kindness, and the power of tenacity. I am so in love with what I do and being able to help others is the icing on my life’s cake. I want the world to know that Herbal Honey is a family brand and they are the family that we are working and creating for.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My Favorites spots in the city are almost exclusively food because I love to eat!

Tea Lees
Coffee at The Point
French Press
Mimosas
Lookout Mountain
The Manitou Incline-technically in the Springs

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many that I want to shoutout! I will start with to amazing female founder whose mission is to help build Black businesses and create community. Makisha Boothe of Sistahbiz and Jice Johnson of the Black Business initiative. They were instrumental in me getting started and acquiring the bulk of the skills and knowledge I use today. I am also blessed to have a tight knit relationship with a retail cohort I participated in several years ago and a consortium of Christian business owners as well. These phenomenal individuals help me every step of the way and I couldn’t be more grateful.
