We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendra Biesemeier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kendra, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I am a busy mom of three, and a wife to a farmer, so there is always plenty to do to keep up with life with them. I absolutely love our way of life, but the older our kids get, the more we started to feel like we were headed backwards financially. It truly feels like, gone are the days of stay at home moms and single incomes! My husband and I knew that it was time for me to go back to work. The idea of this tore at my soul as well as excited me. It’s amazing how fast kids grow up and I hated the thought of missing out on what precious time is left with them! But I have a deep desire to always grow and learn something new everyday, so getting back into the work force would fill that void. With that I told my husband wherever I landed, it had to be flexible enough that I would never feel the stress of having to choose my job over my family. Talk about a tall order to fill!!! With that in mind, I did explore some local jobs that could potentially let me work from home, but nothing stuck or felt right. This all lead to many, many discussions on starting my own business. The problem was, now what? What business? What would work in our small rural community?? How in the world will we ever decide?
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I literally got to where I am today because my husband came home one day and said ” hey, what about starting a printing company where you can print your on canvas wraps?” I took a giant leap of faith and started a printing company up out of nothing! No background, no knowledge, no nothing! The craziest part of it all was, it just felt meant to be the whole time getting my business running. One thing just lead to the next, into the next, as if we were just walking the walk and God was taking the reins! And I don’t mean this lightly, it was the most peaceful thing my husband and I have ever done, especially when this type of thing should really cause some major anxiety! I am truly really proud of the fact that I didn’t have any background in the industry, only a few weeks of training on my printers, and the rest has been up to me, learning and deciding where this business would lead. There are so many possibilities for where this could go, and I am so excited to see where this lands. This road to now hasn’t always been easy. There has been a lot of sleepless nights, and frustrating moments trying to problem solve my way out of many problems. I do have a few resources but it has been challenging to not have a person local to come help out when things get tough. There has been a lot of wasted products and time trying to perfect my products I put out into the world. But I believe these things have to happen to develop, discover, and grow the products I want to make. I have a very strong tendency to be a perfectionist which I have found to be both a blessing and a curse. I am still trying to fine tune the balance of it aiding or hindering my business. At this point, I feel like it has been a great asset in creating quality products that have my customers returning for more!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We live in a very rural area! My hometown is just 1000 population, so this means not even one stoplight in town. Around here, you have to create your own fun. Being summertime now, I’d take my best friend to the local lake which is just 20 minutes from our house to campout and boat for a few days to soak up the sun. I’d also take them to a local brewery just down the road 45 minutes. They have a great hangout atmosphere, great food, and great beer! We would fill in the rest of the time hanging out at my house on the deck relaxing and catching up around a campfire. Around here it’s very relaxed, low key, and it’s the way we like it. It’s simple. It’s peaceful.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Hands down my husband deserves a lot of credit to where I am today! He has been my rock, voice of reason, and my biggest fan from day one! In my weakest moments is when he has come in clutch, and it kept us rolling forward without much hesitation. This business is our business and he has always been willing to step in and help me out when I need it. He also gets lots of text from me needing his input on some of my projects. Since I’m just a one man show, it’s always nice to have extra eyes on things to make sure I’m not missing something! Him and I are in this together and it’s been so fun developing the products I do offer together! I couldn’t do it without him. Best business partner ever!
