We had the good fortune of connecting with Kerry Foreman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kerry, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I went back to school later in life and when it came time to choose an internship location, I knew I wanted something different from the norm and a place I could learn real skills that translated into a very real world. I interned at Noeticus, a mindfulness based counseling and training center in Denver and Empowerment Therapy Center, a place that specialized in working with domestic violence offenders and survivors. The stark difference between the two encouraged me to bring my mindful foundation to our chaotic world in a way that spoke to the masses instead of just some guru on the mountain. It reminded me of the line I had straddled since I was young…growing up in a chaotic home, and doing my best to find a place of peace inside of me. If we can cultivate calm that exists inside of us, we can stop trying to control everything outside of us. I knew this tool would be invaluable to the people like me who had struggled with anxiety and depression throughout their lives but never had any real tools to help us manage it. When I graduated, I began to talk about mindfulness on a more common level, integrating it into all facets of our lives and started Get Grounded LLC. Get Grounded is my private practice, but it is so much more now too. On Get Grounded for Facebook, we have over 20,000 people talking about mental health out loud, parenting, relationships and so much more. We support each other, learn and grow together….it’s really a phenomenal page with people from all walks of life. I offer hiking therapy, online coaching, online groups, workshops and more.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Early on I gave up the cold office atmosphere to run a private practice on the hiking trails in Colorado Springs and an online mental wellness coaching practice as well. I noticed a hole in our mental health system……the middle ground. So many of us don’t fall in an extreme category…..we fall somewhere in the middle. We need tools and skills, but often not years of therapy. We were raised in some sort of chaos, with emotionally immature parents or overall just didn’t get what we needed as children to help us build the life we want. We need resources to help us do that.
I offer free resources on Get Grounded, and I also offer online courses, mindfulness groups, parenting groups, teen groups, tween groups and more. My goal has always been to bring mindfulness down to the masses and offer self healing practices to all. Whether that be through my writing, a drop in class/ workshop, or individual sessions, my goal is to reach more people with mental wellness. I offer tools and skills for your life…..not just reflections and more questions.
I am determined to be as authentic as possible as a therapist and in my writing, so my clients and readers can understand that what they are going through isn’t so different from what we are all walking through. To stop speaking in clinical riddles and to help people understand that we are all healing….in some form or another, from something. Let’s walk together and learn and grow while we do.
I am, and always have been a system questioner. Knowing that our systems were built by people just like you and me and can be redesigned by us as well! Building my business took a mindset that was attached to nothing and open to anything. I decided to create exactly what I needed before I became a therapist. I noticed when my brain put limits on it…..and I paused often questioning the limits….and then pushing harder. My main challenges were created by my own mind. It was a consistent effort to notice what was coming up for me…….question it…..and move forward anyway. I learned so much about myself on the path. It’s important to allow that “becoming” to happen and to effectively move out of your own way.
I have known I was an entrepreneur from a very early age. I didn’t know what I would create exactly, just that I would somehow be working for myself. I think most of us know…..we are the questioners, the rebels, the ones who won’t check your box just because you say so. I think the thing I want to shout the loudest is this……don’t count the kids out who won’t play by your rules. They poke the holes, take the risks and dream bigger. Listen harder, look closer…….they are the lights that lead us to a new world so often.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Having grown up in Indiana, moving to Colorado 12 yrs ago felt like a different planet. The beauty immediately grabbed me and wouldn’t let me go. First thing we are doing when you arrive is getting out onto a trail. Palmer Lake Reservoirs is our favorite trail and offers gorgeous views without wearing you out completely. We are definitely following our hike up with a visit to the Speedtrap Bistro for their french onion soup, Speedtrap salad and their amazing Bloody Mary. We can do a little sight seeing at Garden of the Gods, Manitou and the really cool Cliff Dwellings. That weekend we are definitely headed to Mount Princeton Hot Springs for some rest, relaxation and rejuvenation. The views in Southern Colorado aren’t always mentioned but I have never grown tired of them. I am grateful every day I drive down the hill and am met with the majestic view of our own Mount Herman…..reminding myself to never take it for granted.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My story has many heroes. From a little Laboratory school in Muncie, Indiana that quite literally shaped the core of my being to a family intent on dispelling the labels I had put on myself. My story includes parents of friends growing up who saw my light, to mistakes made that propelled me into the next chapter more informed, and with more fight. It includes every failure in my path because without those, I wouldn’t have known what I was capable of. The first college professor that pulled me aside and said….I believe in you, to the high school english teacher that said I would never be a writer. They all matter. They all helped me rise.
They are all important.
In dedicating my shoutout…. it would be to my husband and two amazing kids. Jeremiah is the foundation on which I began to truly find my voice and he sat beside me until I felt strong enough to use it. He is my biggest encourager, and such an equal partner, I can feel free to go, do, be and create without worry. My kids endured weekends without Mom while I finished graduate school and freely allowing me to write about raising them in hopes of reaching parents everywhere with mindful parenting.
Most importantly, any humans story is not linear. It has turns, twists, retracing, do overs, failures, and finally….the ascent. I am grateful for the jagged journey.
There is one pic that was taken by a professional and her name is Meghan Lauren Photography in Colorado Springs.
