We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin & Margaret Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin & Margaret, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
We strongly believe that it is important to build personal relationships with our clients. Most of our clients are repeat customers who come back to us for additional projects. We take that as a good sign because it means they were happy with the quality of the work and the personal attention they got from us. Some of our most successful pieces are the result of client collaboration.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Kevin started woodworking many years ago as a hobby, building furniture, Adirondack chairs, and other items. As he got more skilled and gained interest from friends and family, he branched out to other items such as wooden signs, flags, custom wood decor, and carved wood stumps.
I (Margaret) have been been creating art since childhood in a variety of mediums, such as watercolor, oil, and acrylic. When I saw what Kevin was doing, I saw an opportunity to collaborate and expand my craft. Not every husband is willing to share his woodshop and teach his wife how to use power tools, but so he did, and I learned to translate my skills to wood, often incorporating other textures, such as glass, stones, resin, and metal.
Along the way, there have been many challenges including tight, shared spaces, botched projects, and consecutive learning curves, but we have learned and grown along the way. We continue to improve and expand our offerings to ensure that each piece is created with care, attention, and most importantly, love. Knowing that each piece will hold a special place in our clients’ homes or serve as gifts for loved ones, we are honored and grateful for the opportunity to create for others.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Our area, a small town tucked in New York’s Lower Hudson Valley and bordering New Jersey, offers the best of all worlds from mountain hikes to beach days to city skylines. Along the route, there are great eateries, scenic drives, and quick access to New York City.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We have done our best to lift each other up, but our local community has provided the most tremendous support, believing in and supporting us all the way. We have built the bulk of our business on referrals and word of mouth, allowing us to grow exponentially over the past two years or so.
