We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Utile and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, how do you think about risk?
As a pastor I believe Jesus wants His followers to live a life of faith. Risk should be a normal part of life as we walk by faith and not by sight. My whole like is kind of one risk after the other. It was a risk to get married, to have kids, to leave the family business to pursue ministry, to move out of state to start a church, to take over a church, and to start businesses.

I don’t think we should throw desecration to the wind. I do believe in a miracle working God, and I also believe in math. There has to be a reasonable plan for the next risk. I just don’t think there needs to be a 100% certainty of success. Like they say, ‘nothing ventured – nothing gained.’

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My main profession is pastoring a church in Broomfield, CO called Reach Church. I have also loved having another job that helps me stay relatable to those in the community. In 2019 I bought a coffee shop in Boulder called The Point Cafe. I had no idea about how to run a restaurant, but I wanted to find practical ways of connecting with and ministering to college students at CU.

During COVID we needed to save money so we started roasting our own coffee – Doulos Coffee Co. Now we partner with dozens of churches and coffee shops; as well as selling our coffee all around the nation to individuals.

A couple years ago we transformed part of our church into a coffee shop and opened it to our community. We are located next to Broomfield High School and we are flooded with students during the week.

During COVID we also started feeding those who were experiencing homelessness on University Hill. Every Friday night we would do something we called ‘Jesus Burgers’ in front of our shop in Boulder. We started to do this for the students in Broomfield before we opened the shop at our church. On average we feed 300 students for free each week during the school year.

Perhaps what sets our business model apart is that I do not make any money from this coffee company. We give away all of our profit to missionaries, church plants, and organizations to reach more people with the Gospel of Jesus.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We have folks come hang with us from out of town often. Every morning we’ll go to Doulos Coffee Shop to grab a latte and breakfast burrito. The first place we take them is a hike up the Flatirons in Boulder. If they like the city we’ll take them to Denver to the Rhino District to see all the wall art and eat good food. If they like the mountains we’ll take them to Estes Park to eat taffy and ice cream, and sit by the river. If they are here on a Sunday we will worship at Reach Church. In the summer we’ll go cool off at Water World, and the in winter we’ll snowboard at Loveland.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All credit and any success goes to Jesus. I would also say that my wife Ashley is the reason I am who I am and can do what I do.
