We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Kapoor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristen, is there something you believe many others might not?
I would say that we’ve often heard people advise others to “stay in your lane.” This is something we could not disagree with more and if that were the case, neither of us would have ever started Flouwer Co. We both have unique backgrounds in subjects that are nowhere near food production and manufacturing, but we followed our passions for gardening and entertaining and created something that we truly enjoy and hopefully also resonates with others. We love what we do and never could have envisioned having this much fun at work!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We definitely agree that we see our products as works of art. Not just because of the way everything is handmade and the hours invested, but also because each bite is unique depending on the garden herbs and flowers we use. All of our products are made with natural, plant-based ingredients including fresh garden herbs and colorful edible flowers which set us apart from other producers. We get super excited when we’re making our cocktail cubes and are experimenting with the natural dyeing and coloring powers of plants and flowers. Nothing about starting and running a food manufacturing business has been easy and we take each challenge as it comes. We feel like persistence and patience are the best lessons we’ve learned overtime. Also, try to find a healthy balance between winging it and perfection – there is no how-to guide for most things, but you also don’t want to miss out on opportunity because you spent to much time aiming for perfection. We just want the world to know that we work very, very hard to make beautiful, tasty, and all-natural products that we hope will make your day little more bright.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have never hosted a visitor without taking them to see Red Rocks – it’s just a must. Because we both live nearby and have kids we generally seem to avoid the more crowded hotspots in lieu for lounging around in Golden. We love experiencing the growing food scene, lounging around Clear Creek and there is no better place to grab a beer. You really can cross everything off your list around here!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We both would have to agree that we would give an extra special shoutout to our families. We were not overly enthusiastic about our careers at the time and came around to launching Flouwer Co. pretty abruptly. We both had to let our spouses in on our plan as well as our decision to not return to our stable paying jobs. As you can probably imagine, this was hard for everyone to wrap their brains around at the time and the concept of an artisanal flower cracker was pretty abstract, but we both knew we were all in! There have been countless missed dinners and hours away from our children – and we know these years with them are fleeting which is something we struggle with constantly – but we take pride in what we are creating and hope we are setting a good example for them, especially the three girls between us, by showing them that with a lot of passion and hard work you can create a career YOUR WAY. We’d also send an extra special shoutout to Kristen’s mom, Sue, who has given up her weekends for the better part of a year to help bake crackers – for free, mind you (she’s a saint)!
