We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, what do you attribute your success to?
This is tough because I can think of so many factors that play into it, but I would say the biggest thing for me has been networking. I have always found it to be very important (and enjoyable) to stay connected with other business owners. I work in the online space, so not only do my business relationships fill my cup socially, but referrals have kept me very busy. This leads me to say that focusing on delivering quality work, organization, and quality communication also plays a big part in the number of referrals I receive.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a marketing business where I create marketing plans for businesses that have the goal of achieving increased visibility, a clear message, and a strategic content plan. My team and I also offer ongoing execution of the marketing strategy (as a Virtual Director of Marketing) for clients who would like to work with us long-term.
One reason I started this business was to have more time with my family, and the flexibility has allowed me to create everlasting memories that I will always cherish.
It wasn’t easy to get to this place, and there have been many pivots (as there always is with any business), but I enjoy the challenge and being able to see the fruits of my labor. The best thing of all is when I get on a call with my clients and we get to talk about the reach we are getting their business. I am so grateful to get to work with super ambitious, kind, and talented clients! It’s so fun for me to help other business owners active their goals.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend visited for a week, I would start by staying at an AirBnb in Breckenridge for a couple of nights. We would check out some of my favorite restaurants there (Blue River Bistro is at the top of the list), coffee shops, and mountain retail shops. Frisco is nearby, so we would probably have to go tubing there.
Then, we would stay at The Maven Hotel in Denver, and a Denver food tour, booked through TripAdvisor, would be on the itinerary as well as checking out Denver Milk Market, and some other restaurants I love (I’m kind of a foodie if you couldn’t tell!). ChoLon would be one restaurant on the list.
We would probably have to walk around Red Rocks Amphitheater because that’s always a must-see. And I would find some fun hikes around Boulder. I love the dog park right next to Avery Brewery in Boulder because it has a nice lake that you can walk around, so we would need to do that and then have a drink and apps at the brewery (they are dog-friendly).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The friends I have made in this online business space I work in have helped me tremendously. I have been in ongoing Instagram messenger chats with them for years, and they have helped me increase my prices, brainstorm new offer ideas, and so much more. I am actually meeting up with a group of them in May for a fun vacation!
I also have to give a lot of credit to my mentors, MIcala Quinn (Host of The Live Free Podcast) and Lindsay White (Founder of The White Label Creative). I have learned so much from them, and I owe a lot of my success to their mentorship.
