Meet Kristin Mauri | Owner of ShoeFly a boutique in Boulder and owner of Luvlapin and online women’s boutique

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Mauri and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m naturally inclined to take risks—not recklessly, but carefully calculated ones. I’ve changed careers three times, and each risk led me on a unique and rewarding journey. These experiences have allowed me to travel the world, speak to large audiences, and fully embrace my creativity and passion for fashion. Of course, there have been challenges along the way, but every risk I’ve taken has been worth the new direction my life has taken. In the world of owning a boutique, being a risk-taker is essential for expanding your product offerings. Sometimes, I’ll take a chance on a shoe or a piece of clothing. Sometimes it pays off, and sometimes it doesn’t. But as long as I’m learning from these risks and understanding why they didn’t work out, I’m growing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey has taken me from pharmaceuticals to fashion! I began my career in drug development, spending 15 years supporting the creation of life-saving therapies for rare diseases, HIV, and other serious illnesses. After those 15 years, I transitioned to the tech industry, working for software companies that provided SaaS-based products for drug development. These two careers consumed 25 years of my life and were anything but easy. As a woman in male-dominated industries, I spent much of my career fighting to break through the glass ceiling. I had to work harder and longer than my male colleagues, often receiving less recognition. But I persevered, eventually building the financial foundation that allowed me to leave corporate America and pursue my passion for fashion.
When I entered the fashion world, I had no experience and no mentors. Yet through relationship-building and hard work, I’ve successfully owned my boutique for six years, survived the challenges of COVID in retail, and recently expanded by launching a women’s online boutique alongside my brick-and-mortar store.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Here’s how I’d plan a trip to Boulder:
I’d start with coffee at Bitty & Beau’s Coffee on Pearl Street. This isn’t just a coffee shop—it’s a human rights movement. With 80% of people with disabilities unemployed, Bitty & Beau’s is committed to changing that and transforming how we see others. Not only can you enjoy a great cup of coffee, but you also contribute to a meaningful cause when you visit.
After coffee, I’d head to Chautauqua Park for a beautiful hike along the Flatirons. The stunning views and fresh air make it the perfect way to experience Boulder’s natural beauty.
For lunch, I’d explore downtown Boulder and choose from a variety of great spots like Lindsey’s Deli, T/aco, or Mountain Sun Brewery. Afterward, I’d spend some time shopping along the Pearl Street Mall, supporting local stores.
For dinner, I’d choose Alberico Pizza if I was craving Italian, or 316 Steakhouse if I was in the mood for something heartier.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been fortunate to receive valuable mentorship from many people throughout my life, but one person stands out above the rest. This individual gave me my first big career break, setting me on a path that allowed me to grow, take risks, and ultimately reach where I am today. Without the opportunity he provided, I’m not sure where I would have ended up. Although I lacked the proper education or training for the role he recommended me for, he believed in me and my ability to rise to the challenge. Even after 30 years, I still thank him for what he did for me. It takes one kind person at the right moment to change your life.
