We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristina Hoyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristina, is there something you believe many others might not?
One piece of conventional advice I disagree with is that life is about balance. I don’t believe that balance exists in the way that a lot of coaches and entrepreneurs, speakers and teachers talk about it. Especially when it comes to high performers and highly driven individuals. There will always be sacrifice and obsession, both of those are what often make someone absolutely incredible at what they do. The “balance” I believe in, is called choice. We get to choose what makes us feel best, what we value and what will drive us towards our target in a more direct and clear fashion with laser like focus. First step is to define what success looks like for you. Second, identify what you deeply value in that arena of life and make sure the two are in alignment. Third, make choices and go all in on those choices with radical responsibility and ownership of what your life looks like right now and what it will look like as you create it. Balance doesn’t exist, choice does.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I entered into the coaching world really having no idea where I “fit in”. I hated the way most people coached and I truly felt like a lot of people were under-qualified and weren’t coaching anyone but were just advising them and charging them a TON of money to tell them that how they felt was wrong, and that they should feel like “this” instead and here is how. That feels so icky to me. I landed on Human Performance Coaching because I help you become a better human, by your definition. I want to help you optimize your performance in your life, success by your definition, not mine nor anyone else’s. Getting to where I am today business wise wasn’t easy, mostly because I spent a solid two years comparing myself to the way others moved through the coaching space and believing that I was doing it wrong (ironic since I literally coach people by first giving them space and permission to move through life how it feels best for them). I overcame the challenges purely through the perspectives, wisdom and support of the incredible people around me and a willingness to try and fail.

When it comes to my story, what I would love for the world to know is that the road has been filled with a ton of challenges: eating disorders, abuse, sexual assault, chronic pain, missed opportunities, failures, lost careers, heartbreak, death, and many honest conversations with God trying to understand why… without an answer in return (yet) but without every single one of those challenges, I would have never developed the perspective or wisdom, deeper understanding and empathetic capability that I have now. Each of those moments have given me the opportunity grow and learn, to embody new versions of myself and to eventually out grow those versions too. Emotional resiliency is so important (something I help a lot of my clients begin to develop too) and is something I developed because of the many obstacles that have been along my path. I wouldn’t have it any other way, and I know there will be many more. I am prepared for them, but not expecting them.

When it comes to my brand, what I would love the world to know is that this is a space of yin and yang, masculine and feminine, empathetic and direct, rest and endurance. There is an air of understanding that there is more expected of you, that I will be holding you to a higher standard because I deeply believe you can meet me there. There is also an air of a safe space to land, exactly as you are. One thing I tell every single one of my clients: maybe there isn’t actually anything wrong with you, maybe you’re just a human and this journey on Earth can be hard. You’ve done what you’ve needed to do to survive up to this point and that’s already incredible. Now, we get to choose what we make of our life, how we respond to it and move through it. Safety is first in the chain of change. This space will always be safe for you. Together, we exist, acknowledge and move through. You are capable of so much, I believe in you. You should too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man, in Colorado? Only one week? First think I would say is that you need to extend for at least two weeks! Such a gorgeous state.

I am just going to make a list:
Manitou Springs for a walk around day
Manitou incline: walk up and run down (high fitness level required)
Hanging Lake
Garden of the Gods
Red Rocks Amphitheater
Queen Bee Brews off of 64th and get some mead
Rocky Mountain National Park hike
Maroon Bells Hike
Bishops Castle

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It’s so interesting, because even just beginning to reflect on this question brings tears to my eyes accompanied by an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I have so many people who deserve credit and recognition in my story, as well as pieces of education, books, organizations, etc. My journey to coaching began with my service in the Navy and the high performing individuals I had the honor to work and serve beside. To them and the Navy, I am deeply grateful. To serve was truly an honor and a privilege. My mom, dad and brother taught me that life can get really tough, but we are tougher. I am endlessly thankful for their fortification and installation of my resilient spirit. I learned how to pick myself up and move forward with courage and honesty from both of them. Chin up, shoulders back, heart open, gaze focused. Jaymie Gerena, my sister wife, for inspiring me every single step of her journey and truly seeing me and witnessing me ever step of mine. Every single client I have ever had the pleasure of working with have all been my greatest teachers, from each of you I consistently learn how to become a better human, coach and woman. I am endlessly inspired by their level of commitment to their evolution and their impact in this world. My best friend Nita, my ride or die, has seen me in incredible lows and the high of highs. I love her deeply and our friendship never ceases to amaze me and strengthen me. She’s been a constant safe space for me to go when life is too heavy to shoulder alone. Dr. Ann Vertel and Mike Kim, two entrepreneurs that have seen something in me from the beginning. I cannot even begin to put into words what they have done for me, simply by believing in me, seeing something in me and holding a higher expectation for me to become something and someone more. Jeana Marino, the most incredible Integrative Business and Authentic Brand Coach, thank you for bringing life to my vision and helping me create a brand that feels so authentic and true to me. You are so brilliant, talented and wise, just having you in my life, and being in yours, elevates me. My best friend Ryan, we have been through so much together. We’ve endured deployments and death, celebrated life and had adventures. He housed me while I started this coaching business and we have lived together ever since. Another one of my ride or dies who supported me before I even believed I could make it. My best friend Sheldon Geer, for never letting me forget to remain playful in life, to seek adventure in all things, to dream big and to trust. I am endlessly grateful for a friend like you who, when I feel like an alien on this planet, helps me feel sane. My healthcare team in San Diego, there too many to really mention here. They took me from debilitating pain that robbed me from my life, to full function with a deep trust in my body. Without them and their belief that I could get better, I probably wouldn’t be here today. Pain is a ruthless companion, capable of carrying many to the grave by their own hand. I am lucky and blessed enough to have found people who believed I could heal. My partner Marshall Kastner. He has been my deepest healing, my biggest lesson and my truest love. I have never met someone so willing to sit in the discomfort with me, to endure the days with me, to ensure I never have to walk alone again. I am endlessly grateful for our evolution together. Thank you for loving me when I didn’t love myself. Lauren Davis, who connected me to this shoutout opportunity and who has given me so many moments of deep learning, connection, and growth. She is a powerhouse of a woman who is leaving such an incredible impact on this world and it’s an honor to be a part of her inside circle, to witness her growth and to walk beside her along the way. Last, but not least, my connection to God and the magic that lives within our world. The pulse of the planet, the animals, the insects, the plants, the people and my God have all reminded me that I am in the exact right place, at the exact right time, doing exactly what I am meant to be doing.
