We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Homann and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly, there was never much of a thought process to it! Growing up, my father ran his own business and I’ve always known that I wanted to do the same. For me, it wasn’t a matter of *if* I would start my own business, it was more a question of when.
Leading up to the creation of Coven and Sage, I knew I wanted my company to be tea-based. I’ve always been a tea drinker – borderline tea obsessed. I also knew that I wanted my company to have a positive impact on women. Then, with the encouragement of friends and inspiration from some Women Entrepreneur meet-up groups, it all just started to fall into place.
If I’m being honest, the hardest part was coming up with a name. No one tells you how stressful that part is! The thought process behind the name is simple though. Like I said, I knew that I wanted this business to support, empower, and encourage women. A coven is a group of witches but beyond that it is a group of women who are wise and powerful and confident in their power. And that is what I wanted to create, a company that encourages women to be their most powerful.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Something that I’m so proud of and excited to roll out is our custom tea blends! When the pandemic started I decided it would be a good time to go to school for herbal medicine. The intention was to learn more about tea blending and formulating but it has turned into so much more. I spent the last year fully immersed in herbalism and I’ve never felt so fulfilled and excited.
One of the reasons I fell in love with tea so early on is the healing component of herbs. There is so much medicine in herbs and it doesn’t need to be complicated. Sometimes a cup of tea is exactly what your body needs.
To start, we will be offering custom tea blends at Coven & Sage for health and wellness. These will be teas that are custom blended for the individual’s needs. Need a tea to help with migraines? We got you! How about something for mental clarity and stress? Yup!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I think what makes Denver so special is the nearby mountains so you better believe that I would have several hikes planned and maybe even a quick camping trip. I won’t give away those spots, because as we all know – when you find a good hike you have to keep it secret!
That being said, there are some spots in Denver that are a must. I’m a sucker for a baked good so definitely a lot of bakery stops. To name a few: Third Culture doughnuts, croissants from La Fillet, and Kouign-amanns from Izzio. Then, obviously a stroll through the Botanic Gardens. Because, plants. And to walk off all of the pasteries.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh, that is a tough one. There are so many people who played a role in getting me here! I think someone that was instrumental in helping me bring the vision to reality was my designer, Jess Anderson. She heard my million rambling thoughts and was able to create something more beautiful than I could have ever imagined.
On top of that, I leave every design call feeling motivated and pumped up! If your designer isn’t also your life coach, what’s the point?!
