We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Schroeder and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I feel so lucky to be in a generation where starting your own business is so common, because I didn’t really think it would be an unusual thing to do. What really had me stuck was my confidence levels when it came to putting myself out there. I was scared to fail. After having my second child though, I really struggled with postpartum depression, and realized I really needed to have an outlet to create through. I’ve always had a creative brain, and I thrive when I’m using it, so I knew starting this would help me with my depression.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a lifestyle family, maternity, and couples photographer! I absolutely love being able to capture memories for people and create art through a camera. I think what sets me apart from other photographers is my attention to detail and also I hope, my care for my clients. I care genuinely about each session and hope that each client walks away from their time with me feeling beautiful and loving their photos, as well as their experience.
Getting to where I am today has not been easy. I’ve had to invest a lot of time, money, and energy into education and equipment, and of course it’s come with it’s fair share of embarrassing learning moments, haha!
I’ve tried to overcome my challenges by first of all venting them to my husband and photographer friends, haha, but then also just taking a step back from my work for a day or two to clear my mind, and then trying to approach it from a fresh perspective. Also reminding myself that challenges are how we grow, and I will make it through and better on the other side.
Some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way are that boundaries are good and necessary in business, and you shouldn’t be embarrassed to be seen starting.
I’m not naturally prone to having firm boundaries, but I realized quickly that I would burn out without them. And no matter how long you’ve had your business, you’ll still be starting new things all the time within that business, so you should never be embarrassed to be seen learning, not knowing what you’re doing, or starting something new. It means you’re on your way to being better.
I hope through my business and brand people see my love for life and all the beautiful things that come with it. Life is hard, but I want to be able to inspire people with connection and emotion through my images.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh goodness. Well I’m definitely a homebody, so I have to admit that I may not be *the* best tour guide haha! But I definitely have my favorite spots, and being a photographer I loveeee nature of course so we’d definitely be spending plenty of time outdoors.
If it was summer I’d take her to the Old Town farmers market, and then head over to Starry Night Cafe or Lima Coffee Roasters for some cute and yummy coffee! Then we’d walk around old town and visit all the aesthetic boutiques and stores.
We’d definitely be getting tacos at TORCHYS, queso and chips at Fuzzy’s, and then cupcakes from The Cakery in Wellington- they’re to DIE for.
Then we’d go for a drive up poudre canyon, visit RMNP, go to a concert at Red Rocks, and if we were feeling adventurous we’d take a drive to Crested Butte to see the wildflowers!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate this to my husband and my kids, who love me unconditionally and are my biggest cheerleaders. Also to Jessica Craig, who took time to help me start my business and has been the biggest support, encouragement, and friend along the way!
