Meet Leah Melzer | Vocalist of Capture This

We had the good fortune of connecting with Leah Melzer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leah, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I’d say writing content that’s consistent across all of our platforms. Aside from music, we run our social media, website, email blasts, etc. It’s important to share what’s upcoming because it’s one of the ways we can let people know what Capture This is all about and connect with fans.

How did you form as a band and what were some of your most proud moments?
Most of us found each other on Craigslist at different points in our lives. Believe it or not, Craigslist is a huge music hub for bands and artists seeking others to join music projects. A few years ago I was looking to join a band and saw that James, the bassist and Joey, the drummer posted an ad looking for a female singer. A few years later, we re-branded the band and music and that’s where Capture This was born. We then posted an ad on Craigslist and that’s where we found Andrew and Dylan, our guitarists. To this day we call meeting each other Craigslist fate.
The name Capture This evolved because being in a band is about more than just the music we put out there for people to hear. It’s about capturing the smallest, greatest moments – being on stage and performing our hearts out, the late night Discord calls the band has together and collaborating with other artists. Being in the music industry for 12 years I’ve learned that being in a band is so much more than ‘capturing’ the music.
Our music is best described as the classic early-mid 2000’s pop-punk. It’s the nostalgic sound of going to a Warped Tour concert back in the day and seeing all your favorites. The powerhouse vocals and pop production tones in our music gives it a fresh twist to the pop-punk classic sound. Secondary to that I’d say the lyrics are what gives a different take to our music. We try to find a balance between writing lyrics that are memorable and easy for people to sing along to while also being relatable. Some of them are about being too comfortable to ever leave a friendship or relationship, breaking free from toxicity in your life and struggling with your inner self.
There’s been two proud moments we’ve had so far as a band. The first one was hearing on Channel 93.3 that we won a spot to play Big Gig on the Locals Only stage at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheater. It completely validated that we have a local following because it was through a voting system in order to win. I remember thinking, “all the little steps we made within a little over a year got us here. This is it.” The second moment was the entire day of playing at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheater. We opened for bands A Day To Remember, Jimmy Eat World, Silversun Pickups, The Maine and more. We also got to play with some of our friends, Years Down, Suitable Miss and Bury Mia. After I walked off stage, a fan named Rainbow came up to us and said that our music inspired her. I’ll never forget that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Drive up to Golden, CO – one of the closest mountain towns to Denver. It’s quaint and the perfect day to escape to the mountains. There’s a downtown with restaurants and shops to check out. Then drive up a scenic loop to Lookout Mountain where you can see the Front Range west of Denver. Cap off the mountain day with a cocktail at Williams & Graham, a prohibition speak-easy in a corner bookstore. You’ve also got to make a stop at Little Man Ice Cream in LoHi and get a double scoop on a cone. There’s always a line wrapped around the corner and there’s a reason for that.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The first shoutout is to the fans who support our music in any way possible. A ‘like’ on our photo, a stream to our song, coming out to our shows; big or small has made an impact on growing our band and getting to share our music.
The second shoutout is to the local bands we’ve met since being a band in Denver. The Denver music scene is such a tight knit community and we’ve all found ways to help each other out – whether that’s referrals to play a show, attending each other’s shows, buying band merch, feedback on new music…the list goes on and on. We’ve made really close friends with a lot of these bands and it’s been amazing to be a part of it.
