We had the good fortune of connecting with Leon Ayala and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leon, what do you attribute your success to?
Excellent customer service. Without my customers, I would just have a hobby.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I create tie-dye art. Growing up, I owned several shirts that I cherished, and I was always curious about how the designs were made. With the accessibility of learning resources today, I taught myself the craft through extensive hands-on practice, experimenting, refining techniques, and learning through repetition.

Beyond the financial investment in supplies, the greatest challenge has been developing patience and accepting the unpredictable nature of tie-dye. The medium is fluid and often produces results that differ from the original vision. Over time, I’ve learned to shift my perspective and appreciate each outcome for its unique qualities. Even when a piece turns out differently than expected, it can still be successful and visually compelling.

When a design does come together as envisioned, it is especially rewarding. Revealing a finished piece is like opening a gift—there is always an element of surprise, which continues to inspire and motivate my work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take them on the Lariat Loop Scenic Byway and show them Colorado’s true beauty. Stopping by Red Rocks, of course. Maybe see a concert there or at another great venue out here. Show them different art galleries and museums. Introduce them to Colorado Green Chili and some great Mexican restaurants like Las Fajitas in Littleton. Maggiano’s for Italian. Then include Chinese, Greek, and Sushi throughout the week. And then show them Denver’s art scene and culture. Rhino, Littleton, Golden.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife and family’s support, especially their encouragement and belief in me, has been essential to my success.
