We had the good fortune of connecting with Liana Pierce and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liana, how does your business help the community?
Having your own business can be tough. But what makes it all worth it for me, is believing in the service we are offering our community. I genuinely believe we provide a safe space for people to better themselves in so many different capacities. Taking time to connect with both their body and their mind. It has such a strong ripple effect, truly bringing some peace to our community. When we take this time for ourselves, we are better to those around us. The ripple effect can be best described with this quote: “When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person that can live at peace with others. ”
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Prior to opening my yoga studio, I spent 12 years in the field of Sales & Marketing.
I have always been a self-starter. One of my proudest accomplishments was putting myself through school at University of California, San Diego. I understand for many, going to a four-year college is just simply what is expected. But that was not my reality. The odds were stacked against me. The first in my family to go to college, we didn’t have the financial stability for it. I went anyway and took on some serious school loans as a newly 18 year old with no cosigner. I even had a Financial Advisor advise that in my situation, I should just go to community college. I felt defeated BUT had this dream and I did not let that stop me. I worked to make an income my entire college career. I would stay up late to work, be at class early, couldn’t even afford the books for my classes. I look back now with such pride. The student loans I took on tripled or more in size because of my age and my interest rate. As much as those payments hurt each month, I have never regretted that decision. It taught my life lessons that I took into my career and now my dream.
I spent 10 years as a Sales and Marketing Manager for various regions. I effectively managed multimillion-dollar books of business with high annual growth objectives. I assisted with the development of education and training programs for our client base and our staff in order to improve efficiency, sales and financial results. I had to make proactive selection decisions in the field to optimize the flow of new business, while actively seeking out high-quality clients and discontinuing partnerships that do not align with company objectives. And then, I realized: corporate life was not for me.
I saved and I saved. Every bonus. Thinking that when the time comes, I would make a career change and likely make much less. But when that time came, I thought: what if I worked for myself?
People always ask you what would you do if you weren’t doing “XYZ”? And at that time, I realized that I always lit up when I talked to people about health and wellness. I knew that was my passion. and here we are.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them for a long walk in Woodward Park, maybe hit up the Japanese Zen Garden! Lunch at Heirloom and a dinner at Annesso or Annex. A trip to Yosemite if we had time!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
People have been so kind to call me “brave” for this journey, but it’s important to note that none of it was possible without the help of SO many. I feel overwhelmed with gratitude when I reflect on the group of people around me who have helped make my dream a reality in more ways than I can even count. From literally mopping floors and sweeping endless amounts of dust during our build out, to last minute being somewhere for me when I could not, to simply telling me they believed in me. The list could go on and on.
Let’s not forget about the husband who one day had a wife helping to provide for a dual income household, who then came to him with a pipe dream and he said ” if it makes you happy – go for it.” What?! Who does that. He did, and he does, every day. When I have to miss dinner to last minute sub, when I have to run out because something went wrong. He shows up for me, for our family.
I am humbled and beyond grateful for the many people that helped me get to where I am, and I will never take any of it for granted. It truly takes a village.
